My father has the idea that maybe, just maybe after a beam of light has traveled through space for a few million light years, it might slow down a little. Any thoughts on this subject?

I live in Michigan and it's cold in the winter, no leaves on the trees. We have many birds that don't migrate and I've always wondered where they take shelter at night. I see them all day, then at night they're gone. Where do they go?

With the new design of the CEV going back to "Safe and Proven" applo designs of capsule launch and landing, what technological benefit does this have? The shuttle pushed the boundaries of aircraft design and computer arcitecture and had many trickle down effects on devices we use in every day society. The new CEV will have none of these benefits but will launch more often. Where should the balance be, with the design and implementation of the craft or with the discoveries it could make in space?

I understand that lightening has millions of volts and thousands of amps. I also understand that a bolt of lightening is 5 -15 times hotter than the sun. Do we have the technology to attract lightning and transform its electricity into usable power? If not, is it theoretically possible?

If any physicists care to answer, here are the details: if I jump off of a balcony that is 3.28 metres above the specified chandelier (located where the acceleration due to gravity is 9.78 m/s^2) at an initial speed of 14.9 m/s and I leap 0.61 m high with respect to the initial point of take-off (the balcony), is there a good chance I can swing on it without bringing the whole contraption down? I don't know any specifics about the chandelier except that it costs just over 6,000 USD. An estimate is appreciated from anyone, but especially physicists.

I really don't understand what you think. Please help me understand!
Do you think humans were really around when the earth first started to have life?
What about all the fossil records that show billions of years of progress and adaptation?
What do you think of dinosaurs; did they hop on the boat with Noah or what?
What about prehistoric versions of animals we have today, for example, sloths? Obviously many species have changed since back then; why and how if not evolution?
What about cases such as dwarfism, where species who are isolated on islands tend to develop smaller to fit their enviornment?

Thanks, I'd really like to know what the other side of the coin is!

My question is this. In your book, you theoretically explain the beginning of the universe, the cause and effect, et al. As you will agree, all things have a beginning. Thus, I am interested in knowing your theories of what took place before your explanation of the beginning. Despite what one's beliefs are, big bang, etc., what was the prelude to that? What was the cause of space? How did space begin? In this vast universe that you have written so much about, what began that?

For hundreds of millions of years, the earth has being going in and out of ice ages. At one point, maybe 300 million years ago there was an event called "Ice ball earth" in which the entire earth was covered by ice. There have been 100 theories to explain ice ages, but none have been proven to be correct.

Therefore, while I believe global warming should be studied and monitored, I fail to see how we can be certain that this warming is not part of the earth's natural cycle of going in and out of ice ages.

At present, the normal state of the earth is in an ice age. The dates very, but we generally we spend 100,000 years in an ice age and then pop out into a warming period of 10,000 to 20,000 years that we are in now.

I use the analogy of the mayfly that only lives one day above ground to breed. One may mayfly says to another: "The day is getting warmer and warmer. The end is near." After it is eaten by a toad, the toad says, "The earth heats and cools every 24 hrs."

First, you can't say the Big Bang is not bright enough - there shouldn't be anything brighter than that; second, you can't say it's too far for the light to travel to us - the universe is where light can reach since the Bang, and we're not on the edge of the universe.
