If any physicists care to answer, here are the details: if I jump off of a balcony that is 3.28 metres above the specified chandelier (located where the acceleration due to gravity is 9.78 m/s^2) at an initial speed of 14.9 m/s and I leap 0.61 m high with respect to the initial point of take-off (the balcony), is there a good chance I can swing on it without bringing the whole contraption down? I don't know any specifics about the chandelier except that it costs just over 6,000 USD. An estimate is appreciated from anyone, but especially physicists.

Well, do you think I can fly faster than 14.9 m/s? I never had to do this before...it was just an estimate, but probably a pretty bad one, eh? Enter your figures instead, and let me know what you replace my 14.9 with. Thank you!

I'm somewhere between 75 and 80 kg (I think that's around 175 pounds)...not sure because I haven't checked lately. I'm 181 cm tall (I think that's between 5 ft. 11 in and 6.0 ft.). Double check my conversions...it's just quick mental math. I hope this aids in your calculations. :)

Regardless of how much the chandelier cost, I doubt that it was designed to hold much more than its own weight -- let alone an extra 75 kg! And especially if you somehow can just at it going 14.9 m/s you rocket you!

Try it and find out. if it works great! if not run! and blame it on some abo kid if you get caught.

The only thing you need to be concerned about is how well the chandelier is mounted to the ceiling and what the chandelier is made of. If it's glass forget it. If it is metal I give you 50/50 chance of success.

You should check the mounting on the chandlier first because you might need to reenforce that.If that seems like it is in good shape then I say go for it. There shouldn't be any problems, let us know how it goes!

I think it's worth a shot. Just make sure you have someone videotape you doing it and put it on the web.
