I live in Michigan and it's cold in the winter, no leaves on the trees. We have many birds that don't migrate and I've always wondered where they take shelter at night. I see them all day, then at night they're gone. Where do they go?

In California, the birds group up and head into the city and camp out in trees in parking lots. The reason is safety in numbers and to avoid the owls that hunt at night.

Sometimes you come out of a movie and forget about it. You start your car, scare a flock of birds who are asleep in the tree above your car, they all wake up and all s**t all at the same time on your car.

They usually roost in coniferous(evergreen) trees since they afford more protection than the bare branches of Deciduous trees, also most birds that overwinter in snowy places feed on the seeds etc of evergreen trees since they are the most abundant food source in winter.

they usually perch somewhere for the night and stay there. Probably the warmest and least drafty place they can find. They do not build nests in the winter...as someone else suggested..they only build nests to reproduce in....not live in.

The ones I've seen usually go right when they take off no matter where they are. It lightens them up so they can fly easier.
