Her name is Bridget she is a quarter horse and is 15 hands we're probably gonna show her in the hunters/jumpers. We named her bridget because she is chestnut and irish people have reddish hair and bridgets a irish name. She has a star and a stripe and shes a really great horse.

I live & work in the horse ind & I know we dont live in a perfect world. I read 400K + horses were killed last year, that means 400K that were not wanted-most w/ bad injuries or others who lived w/ inadequate food & no vet care for too long. Sure, some good ones slip through & the thought of a kill plant makes me SICK-but seeing some of these animals and the thought of making them live makes me FURIOUS! There are too many animals in this situation to shut these plants down! Question for those who fought for the lives of those 400K horses: Are you going to open rescue facilities for those animals? Are you going to supply care? Others arent. Horses are already being left on interstates and the neglect is already adding up. Its hard to hear about kill plants but it is CRUEL to make so many live in the conditions that we create-people will let them sit & rot. It is inhumane to keep the plants closed, not open! Please pick another battle and dont let any more suffer!

After a quick trip to the vet this morning (nothing serious), I got to thinking. What does everyone keep onhand for minor First Aid in the barn? I keep Furizone, Cut n Heal, peroxide, vet wrap, iodine, etc. Not just something you need a prescription for, but just good items to keep on hand for the minor everyday bump, scatches, and scrapes that horses seem to get. Or items that can help in an emergency until you can get to the vet. A lot of new horse owners may not have these (or even know that you can use a lot of household items for horse First Aid) and sharing this information could save someone a lot of stress.

I have recently watched the movie "Pharlap" which was based ona true story. After finishing watching it, I realised that horse racing can be really cruel to the horses. I saw how hard they pushed the horse, made him sick, and how the crowd would 'poison' or hurt him if he lost or in fact even won a race. Does anyone agree with me? That horse racing is cruel?

We have an old Arabian horse, Disney, 25 years old, that we rescued two years ago. His owner had passed away. He has chronic founder and couldn't even walk when we brought him home. I have had my vet come out and he says that his teeth are pretty much gone and he is old and has a malnurution problem due to old age. People who don't know better have called the SPCA on us several times. And they have been out to our place to inspect all the animals. None of our other animals are that old and skinny. After three visits from the SPCA, I gave them my vets number but they didn't follow thru with calling him. After the third notice that they left, I called and advised them that if they didn't call our vet then that was harrassment and they haven't bothered us since. do u dislike the SPCA?

We moved to a new state from California last year, only to discover the horrible conditions for local animals. The only non-kill shelter for SEVEN surrounding counties is full to capacity, not accepting any more animals. The local animal shelter puts down nearly three quarters of all the animals it receives; killing 285 animals last month. Their staff is unfriendly and unwelcoming of volunteers. Abandoned looking barns near the road by my home are known for dog abandonment; I've rescued four dogs from there, myself. Unfortunately, the land's owner will shoot any strays he sees. Another symptom of the poor care: law enforcement officers can only remove an animal if it is proven they receive inadequate food, water and/or shelter. There in lies my problem. My neighbors have two large dogs. Both dogs are walking mats; I've never seen anything like it! They have difficulty moving...they barely made it through the heat of the recent drought. Is there anything I can do?

My horse needs a high fat diet -I add vegetable oil to his feeds but during the summer he is turned out 24/7 and his feed consists basically of carrots, biotin and garlic - if I add the usual amount of oil to this it looks like soup and he won't eat it. As a result he has decreased mobility during summer. Can't go on to concentrated feeds as he is a "good doer" and prone to weight gain ( which again doesn't help his mobility issues - I'm fighting to keep weight off him ) Any ideas ?

Alllllll too often, well hourly anymore it seems,

People are posting on here wanting advice for some bratty horse vice and when seeking professional help is recommend, they totally freak.

How do you think the professionals learned? Trial and error? They learned from other professionals. If its a money thing, then why have a horse in the first place to ruin beyond all means? Just because you get a horse, you can pet horse and you can brush it, doesn't constitute you being a trainer.

Also, why post vet questions and basically same thing, I don't have the money, I just want to see if someone had advice, I will wait a while etc. There is a reason there are vets people.....

I would love to hear why ppl writing in here about training and vet questions and then are so against it, are????

I have a two-year-old mare named Flick. She takes a bridle and a bit real well. And when I put the saddle and I tighten up the girth she doesn't care. I tried laying across her back (not all the way) she does not even pin her ears back. I even put my foot in stirrup she does not do anything but stand there. I am working of reining with two long loung ropes by going left and to the right. I think I am going to wait until she is three though. So what do ya'll think?

I need a huge favor, my son qualified for state in all 3 classes on my mule, halter, showmanship and trail. They will not allow him to show at state here in WY because he's a mule.

Other states, in fact all surrounding WY will allow mules, so we are going through the petitioning process, something new to me. I haven't ever done this before.

Could you tell me what state you are in and if mules are allowed at state 4-H and if so can they show in all classes?

I would very much appreciate it, as my son would. Feel free to email me privately also if there is other info you would like to include that you don't want to put to public. We appreciate your help, hes so bummed.

Heres his winning pic.

There has been much talk on this board about the slaughter ban and the impact it is having. There are also posts everyday from people wanting to breed their mares or keep stallions intact.
Take a look at this film to get some perspective on how bad the situation is and become part of the solution. It is disturbing but it's a message that needs to get out there and impact people. It's no good being smug because you helped ban slaughter. If everyone that viewed this film today then sent $10 to ReRun or another rescue association, it would be a start. More importantly, if just one person gets the message and reconsiders breeding their mare because they think she is pretty and will have a cute foal then this has served it's purpose!
