That's a tough one because of the horse related tragedy they have endured. They are scared for you and with good cause judging by the past. They love you and may never want you to ride. I would try telling them that one day, when you are grown you will ride no matter what they say but without proper training while you are young you will be even more likely to get hurt. Find a person who gives lessons and see if they can help by reassuring them that their horses are gentle and do not bite and that you will learn in a riding pen with soft, plowed ground and an experienced rider will be there at all times. Assure them you will buy and wear protective equipment too. I wish you luck but keep in your mind they may have been so traumatized by past injuries that logic may not come into play for them.

OK you can beg and cry and throw your hair ribbons on the floor as other people have suggested.

If you're like most parents of whining children, the answer will go from just plain "no" to "Hell No!" to something unprintable in this forum. Fat lot of good that will do you.

I don't recommend tantrums or whining.

I say, wait until you're an adult - as in graduated from college and supporting yourself. Then you can ride at your own risk.

Ordinarily I would suggest to would-be riders to take a beginner course of 8 - 12 weeks of lessons to see if riding is really the sport for you. However, seeing that your parents are really concerned about you getting hurt - I would suggest you shelve this dream until you can take the full responsibility on your own shoulders.

Trust me. With horses, it's truly not a question of whether you will get hurt - it's how badly will you get hurt. Over the past 50 years I have acquired a Missing tooth, crushed face, visible scars on my back from being dragged through barbed wire and a broken spine.

sounds like your parents are afraid of you getting hurt. My suggestion is do a lot of studying of literature on riding and the chances of you getting hurt then research some of the stables that give riding lessons and what their precautionary measures are, such as do they require helmets and so on..do they have someone that spots at all times and how long do they work with you before they let you ride on your own. But most importantly do this only with your parents permission and involve them in ALL the research you are doing and show them proof of your research. Let them know that you understand the risks and well basically talk to them with the understanding that they are your parents and they care and with the accidents involving horses already in your family you have to let them know you understand they are worried. I have been riding for 35 years and started riding with my son in the saddle when he was just a month old and he is 7 now but we still make him read about the responsibility of being safe around horses and what to do if something was to happen. I also make him wear long sleeves, jeans and boots, oh and don't forget the helmet when he rides. It isn't that they don't trust you are responsible they are just afraid of you getting hurt. But this is all just advice and it is what I would expect my child to do in this situation so get as much information as you can on horses, riding and riding academies or anywhere else in your area you would take lessons, keep your parents involved, talk to them an let them know how much you want this and just work together

OMG! I guess your parents are just worried, as a mom I can really see why, but I have ridden since I was 9 and seen lots of awful accidents, including a death though thankfully it wasn't anyone I knew personally. Horse riding can be dangerous, but providing you take care and wear all the safety equipment available, you will be minimizing those risks.
I let my 3 kids ride and I always worry when they are tearing around the countryside, but if you really yearn for something I think they will let you, if you explain how you can make it as safe as possible. Good luck I hope you can get them to give you the chance. And remember, lightening shouldn't strike 3 times!

first of all, ask your parents if you can just try it a few times, to show that you can do it. not all horses are going to bite you-they have to be mad, or just plain nasty. if you can find a place with a horse that is nice and great to ride, ask your parents if you can just try it. maybe if you tell them you will pay for the first few lessons if it doesnt work out, they might say yes. one way to prevent getting hurt is wearing a helmet, and only ride the horses you feel comfortable and safe around. if your nervous or dont like the horse, they can feel it and it will just make the ride harder. tell them you would like to just try it a few times, show them how you're willing to work at it, and that its safe if you know what you're doing, or know someone who does and can help you. keep asking, but i wouldn't beg on your knees or cry, that won't get you anywhere.

you can tell them that you will pay for a few weeks and if it doesnt work out they can say no.

it also depends on the horse you ride. SOME horses bite because people [with out knowing] taught them to bite because they hand feeded the horse. find a horse that doesnt bite. SOME horse spook at everything that moves but most horses dont.

tell them you will ask for a horse that is slow and is harder to get moving. because then it will be easier to get them to stop.

IF THAT DOESNT WORK:
tell them that you will always wear a helmet. tell them that you will always be with someone in case you fall off. and you could tell them that you will get a body protector. and alway call when ur going to be late. and if u r really desperate then you can tell them that u will wear knee pads, elbow pads, etc.

its just another risk. you could get hurt playing any sport. yes horse backriding you have a higher chance but you have a chance of walking out the door and getting shot. if your going to get hurt it mine as well be doing something you love. i broke my arm last year and to tell you the truth if i died in a riding accident i wouldnt regret it for a second if i had a second chance

tell your parents this:
the only way to be safe around horses is to have experience around them. because i never ride, the only way to be safe riding a horse is to have experience riding them. the better i am at riding, the less likely i will hurt myself!

i don't see how your parents can resist that!
