Go to Sallys Beauty Supplies and you can get temporary colored spray - just use that. Should be just fine because I use the black for spraying bay horses legs and tails prior to entering the sales or show ring and never had any skin reactions. Just remember that on a gray or palomino, they might take several washes to get out, same applies for people with blonde hair.
Err Horselady, who said I was altering the color? If the tail is black but not as black as the tie in or extensions or is just sun bleached, it's called evening it out and if you've ever been to any high dollar futurity sales, you'll find that it is a common practice and accepted. Same goes for the legs, it gives a more uniform appearance. It's not changing it to a totally different color and no different from using chalk or shoe whitener on socks? Does that make using black face grease illegal too? Not sure where you have been all your life but obviously not at the same sales as me!
And yet again Horselady, nobody changed the color? What part do you not understand? Wasting my breath obviously!

In addition to what Lisa M said, you can also by the clip in hair in the wild colors. I have seen them listed on eBay. That will also add fullness to a tail. You may also look at using the face paint (like you see used on the kids at fairs and such), since I am pretty sure it is hypoallergenic and should not cause a reaction. Horselady, you are way off base. It was never stated that the horse's entire coloring was being changed for a sale (which I do not know anyone who would be foolish enough to try that a big sale), but instead the legs, white markings, etc. were being enhanced. If that was illegal, the horse shows would have to shut down, since everyone there does the same things.

You can also use the non-toxic powder paint (usually used in kindergarten) that comes in a container as powder, then you mix water with it to get the consistency of thickness you want. You can find this at any arts/crafts stores such as Michaels. Staples may carry it also. I think this works best because when it drys it's really crusty and will stick to the hair much better. Then you just rinse and it should all wash out.

You can get tons of different colors and you can even get glittery or solid hoof polish! I would totally recommend it from what I have heard and seen. It works great. Well I hope this helps!

You need to buy the coloring from an equine products company as your horse can be allergic to any kind of human hair coloring product. Safety for your horse is the utmost. Also, to Lisa M., altering a horse's color for any type of sale is completely illegal.
And paintpony, Lisa M. was referring to horse SALES, which IS illegal to alter anything including color of legs or mane and tail (may use hoof black only), she did NOT refer to use in horse shows in which you are allowed to do these things. Read your rule books! :^)

Manic panic comes in hot colors, just make sure you get the temporary stuff, =-) Also, Kool-Aide, (we used it on our own hair when I was a kid for wild colors), any spray in stuff like you find for Halloween; hit Hot Topic, they've got lots of stuff, Sally's as well.
Have Fun!
