I live & work in the horse ind & I know we dont live in a perfect world. I read 400K + horses were killed last year, that means 400K that were not wanted-most w/ bad injuries or others who lived w/ inadequate food & no vet care for too long. Sure, some good ones slip through & the thought of a kill plant makes me SICK-but seeing some of these animals and the thought of making them live makes me FURIOUS! There are too many animals in this situation to shut these plants down! Question for those who fought for the lives of those 400K horses: Are you going to open rescue facilities for those animals? Are you going to supply care? Others arent. Horses are already being left on interstates and the neglect is already adding up. Its hard to hear about kill plants but it is CRUEL to make so many live in the conditions that we create-people will let them sit & rot. It is inhumane to keep the plants closed, not open! Please pick another battle and dont let any more suffer!

The answer to that one is easy, they all jump on PETA's bandwagon without any thought of the consequences. They do not offer support in any form to the rescues that now have to deal with the problem and they then proudly pat themselves on the back and are very vocal of their "achievement". Too many people live in a world far removed from the real one and they make a bad situation far worse. I totally agree with you and we are only just seeing the tip of the iceberg.

Did anyone see "The Coreys" on A&E - Corey Feldman and his dopey wife need waking up spewing their vegan PETA crap - I turned it off because I couldn't listen to anymore of it!

I agree and I also feel that the breed associations should get way tougher on registration and should really find a way to promote gelding. Inspections and if the horse does not meet the breed standard, then geld or pull papers. Stop issuing papers to babies of stallions who have never entered a show ring of any kind and won a dern thing. Hike the registration fees for stallions or maybe have the owners pay a yearly fee to keep their horse a stud. Give incentives (free registration, free yearly memberships) for geldings. This might be a small way that the breed associations could aid in the fight against unwanted horses. I think if some of the breed founders saw what papers where being given to today, they would faint. Their intention was to breed true to type quality horses. Not something with 4 legs and a tail. Open tha houses back up and get really tough on Mr. BYB and hopefully we can help the situation

I agree with you, I have to say. It seems that no one considered what to do with these horses when the slaughter houses shut down. I do NOT like the idea of slaughtering these horses, but I like the idea of them getting sent to Mexico for slaughter or just thrown out on the back 40 and left to fend for themselves FAR FAR less.

Within 4 weeks of the plants closing, Kentucky was already complaining of horse over-burdening.

I *LOVE* horses, I love my horses, and I would love to rescue a horse or two that would have ended up in a slaughter house someday, but there are just not enough places for the slaughter-bound horses to go. And while that particular ending of a beautiful horse's life is a horrible thought, it is an easier path thatl etting the horse suffer from neglect and lack of care for the remainder of its days.

Yes, these is a solution...people shouldn't keep horses if they can't take care of them properly! Because of human ego and the notion that because "they are American" they can do what they want is the biggest problem there is. People are building houses (excess), taking open plains that once was able to sustain the horses leaving them with limited habitat. We are all responsible for this mess (some more than others). Killing healthy horses is horrible, just like killing healthy dogs and cats because people aren't responsible in keeping their pets neutered. Maybe the wild horse could be fed birth control laced food or caught and neutered to keep the population in check. I know there has to be something better than heartless killing of such a beautiful member of our planet.

I strongly believe in using all of an animal for the feeding of others (animals, people, plants, whatever). (even your pet, after death, if at all possible - why waste them). Many countries slaughter dog, cat, fish, cows, horse, etc - thats not the issues.....where the problem comes in is the humanity and conditions these animals live in before slaughter.

What ever animal it is - they deserve to have humane treatment and a humane death.

We eat cow, pig & other countries people don't eat eaither one. What about VEAL??? I think that is BAD!!! I don't eat veal because of what they do!!! Why don't people do something about those babies??? I am with you! I think people who don't have horses should not be allowed to have a say!!!! Just because they have NO idea!!!!!! I will get all kinds of thumbs down but this is how I feel about it!!!!
