There has been much talk on this board about the slaughter ban and the impact it is having. There are also posts everyday from people wanting to breed their mares or keep stallions intact.
Take a look at this film to get some perspective on how bad the situation is and become part of the solution. It is disturbing but it's a message that needs to get out there and impact people. It's no good being smug because you helped ban slaughter. If everyone that viewed this film today then sent $10 to ReRun or another rescue association, it would be a start. More importantly, if just one person gets the message and reconsiders breeding their mare because they think she is pretty and will have a cute foal then this has served it's purpose!

Obviously you misunderstood - I don't want to breed any mare, it's a hypothetical question with a film that shows the consequences of an out of control horse population and the products of indiscriminate breeding!

That made me tear up!!!! Lisa that is a good question to put on here!!!! Some people are just clueless!!!!! Just like that girl yesterday & her 2 questions...... The other one she has says "If there was a god--- why would let this happen"------- The way some people are just make me sooooooooo very sad!!!! I didn't breed this year, but 2, & they were sold befor they hit the ground. My stud has AWSOME bloodlines & he does have wonderful babies, but because of all this I don't breed him..... Well that sucks because of these "backyard breeders" Those of us who are breeding very well bred horses are feeling this impact. I feel bad for this..... & it hasn't even hit the eye of the storm..... We haven't even seem the worst yet!!! & What makes me REALLY sad is for those poor mustangs, These wild horses are not going to have a chance!!! I love Mustangs they are truly great horses & people think that they are throw away horses...... That is what really gets me!!!! The wild ones will get it hard I am thinking!!!!!!! People think because they are wild Mustangs that they are trash!!!! & I want to know those people who are patting themselfs on the back for voting to stop the slaughter, what are they doing??? This is such a sad topic!!!!! I wish I had all the answers for this......

Personally, I don't think this issue is so much about an out-of-control horse population as it is about clueless horse owners. The solution: If you don't know what you're getting into, don't breed your horse. If you don't know what is involved in horse ownership, don't buy a horse. If you don't trust the people you're selling to, don't sell your horse. If you're ever uncertain about something in the horse world, do your homework before you take action.

Unfortunately, the people who most need this advice are the people who won't take it.

The purpose of breeding is to better the breed! Not every horse (or any other animal) is fit to breed.

Just because your mare is pretty, has a good disposition, etc. is no reason to breed her. Conversely, just because your stud horse is a great-great-great grandson of Secretariat is no reason to keep his nuts. These kind of "breeders" fail to realize that all they are doing is producing more nickle bred horses that nobody wants.

Breeding should be left to professionals who have the betterment of the breed first and foremost in their mind!

i agree with you completely... the ban is ridiculous... pretty soon the cost of a horse is going to go down to nothing because there are so many.. and most of them are going to overrun with disease... slaughter at least kept the population in check and our horses from catching the diseases... now what are we gonna do???

No, there are to many horses in the world and slaughter is being slowly stopped, if you breed your mare, her baby has a chance of going to slaughter. Please dont.

wow, what a powerful video. Thanks for sharing that. I wish all the backyard breeders and any other breeders would see that and realize its not worth bringing another unwanted horse in world.
