My flat has a large living area and small garden, and there is a huge park behind my flat. Is that enough space for a puppy? I have my heart set on a Bassett Hound, any thoughts?

We recently bred our French bulldog with another French bulldog. As we preferred not to pay a "stud fee" we opted to give one of the puppies to the sire. Does anyone know what the etiquette on this is? Do they get first pick? Last pick? If they specify a preference for M/F or color does that give them priority over our pick (one of the puppies is going to stay in our family)? We are both wanting females so I'm worried if only one female is born how this will work out... Any help you can offer (by those "in the know") would be greatly appreciated! I've searched online but can't seem to come up with an answer.

Not nessescarily money wise, but to build a good reputation in whatever field you chose to pursue?

Is it a base of well-chosen contacts?
Or been raised by a family in the horse business?
To have a degree?

Please assist me as I am really curious. Obviously some of the above things would really help, but what are the key things you have found?
