Are we not still a sovereign nation? It's time for isolationism again. We've seen what this "inclusion" of other nations in our political process has gotten us. Nothing but sell out politicians who will bend over backwards to appease some dirt country that doesn't have anything to offer in return.

The Sunday Times food critic, A. A. Gill, stopped in Penrith and said "the locals, in stark counterpoint to their surroundings, are the ugliest people in the nation. That's despite fierce competition from the Scottish Borders." (Taken from his article in the Sunday Times Style magazine of 30 September.)

Whilst I normally enjoy Mr Gill's wit and ascerbic use of the English language, I have to protest. I am married to a Cumbrian - a man with film-star good looks. My mother in law is a handsome woman. How dare Mr Gill suggest that Cumbrian's are the ugliest people in the nation!

So, let's put it to the vote. Who do you think are the ugliest people in the nation? 10 points for the most entertaining and plausible answer (but if you say Cumbria I will give you a thumbs-down!).

A person in china is jailed and tortured for days now all because he had the courage to get a petition signed by 10000 people. The petition was for the olympics to be held in china and how people are being thrown out of their homes because the government needs land to make new sports venues. My question is how can we sit back and watch the games knowing what had to happen to make these games possible. I have gone on olympics.com and have yet to see anything that addresses this situation. Give me some suggestions on what we could do or just leave your name as an answer to show you care and hopefully we can get our voices heard.

"First of all, when we read first this short story for the first time we could be annoyed because this story is strange, a bit irrational and there is a lot of suspense ! Besides, we don't know exactly what's happened to Anna. Where did she go? Did she join her fiancé whose name is Vladimir? Was she really followed by a demon? Had she a lover? So many questions we could not resolve... But when wo look closer - or rather, when we read closer - this short story can be interesant: indeed, it informs us about customs in the 19th century : for instance, in those times, to have a son in America was considered a blight in a Jewish family (like having a convert or a suicide) and the historical context is respected, I think in particular to Ellis Island,it was the island where slaves were sent when they arrived in New York's harbour. Moreover, despite the fact os this story is irrational, it shows us the difficulty that people who come from another country can know when theyarrive in a country"

I see all this stuff about saving Darfur and the typical rigamarole of going through the UN and other Byzantine bureaucracies and it feels like a repeat of Bosnia or Rwanda to me. As in too little, too late!
Wouldn't it make more sense to train and arm the villagers of Darfur to defend themselves? I mean the Janjaweed militia is a bunch of yahoos on horses, for heaven's sake!
Horse Cavalry has been obsolete since WWI although it still was sparingly used in WWII. But 2007? Send them metal for making caltrops, a tripod with a metal spike sticking up. This was a classic way of detering cavalry. That and some machine guns and RPG's and a few stingers should do a lot to get the Sudanese Government's head out of its rectal cavity!!
What do you think? Am I right or out to lunch on this?

This seems to be the theme of the current presidential campaign, but doesn't this go against what the founders of the US intended.

Can someone show me where the founders identified the US as a Christian nation?

I find it amusing that liberals are jumping on Craig when they have supported Barney Frank and other openly gay congressional members for years. As for the denial issue, Clinton is still in denial over monica and Hillary has also been in denial but she is now the leading candidate. Talk about double standards this Craig thing is a prime example.

Seriously, whatever happened to being "innocent until proven guilty" ?

Do we really have the right to accuse the McCann's of killing their daughter, when we supposedly live in a modern democracy that believes in the presumption of innocence?

Gerry McCann seems to have given up work permanently. Not suprising when you think that they now have access to a million pounds plus fund. Within hours of Madeleines disappearance the McCanns had set up the "find Madeleine" fund with web page asking for donations and "fund raising" events, Gerry also managed to write his blog each day on the "Bring Maddy Home" webpage. I find it strange therefore that no webpage has been set up for the Ltd Company, detailing what is being done with the money. Surely a million pound company should have it's own web page. Thousands of decent people donated that million pounds in good faith, in response to that I think it is only correct that a web page is set up so people can see where the money they kindly donated is going. They have set up web pages for everything apart from the fund. Little weed posted an interesting link yesterday. Have a read of this and see what you think. Then answer me this question. "Should the Fund be frozen NOW".
