A person in china is jailed and tortured for days now all because he had the courage to get a petition signed by 10000 people. The petition was for the olympics to be held in china and how people are being thrown out of their homes because the government needs land to make new sports venues. My question is how can we sit back and watch the games knowing what had to happen to make these games possible. I have gone on olympics.com and have yet to see anything that addresses this situation. Give me some suggestions on what we could do or just leave your name as an answer to show you care and hopefully we can get our voices heard.

There are so many violations of human rights in China you might question our cooperation with them on anything. You can not watch the Olympics but who would know. Myself I try to avoid by anything made in China but that becomes more difficult all the time. The government can not do as much as the people can because of political consideration(trade retaliation) I think if everyone stopped buying toys made in China the Holiday season it would be a step in the right direction.

China has been in violation of human rights for as long as it has existed. One stipulation for getting the Olympics is China agreed to improve its human rights agenda. So, it seems that the Olympic coalitions would have some muscle here. There is an awareness. I believe it was Nat. Geographic that reported this months ago, and that is a magazine that carries a lot of punch in certain circles.

this is sensitive. many individuals/ngo will make certain remarks. majority of those going to the games will not care. governments will say its an internal affair n will not interfere....

so its difficult to take a stand. i fully agree with u tt authorities shld be mindful of the needs of the people. i heard from some beijing friends that they r given housing alternatives in new housing estates but refused n some demanded more compensation.
its really tough as we outside of china dont hv the complete version. even those in china or beijing wont know exactly as there is censorship.
many of us are in agreement with u.
