The French gave the United States the Statue of Liberty and even aided the struggling colonies during the Revolutionary War. However, the French do not like and haven't like the United States for awhile and especially since during WW II the United States did not recognize Charles de Gaulle's Free French resistance. When Charles de Gaulle became president of the Fifth Republic, he was still resentful that FDR had refused to recognize his Free French resistance over the Vichy regime during the war and he felt that he could not trust the United States government. So you have the French distrusting the United States and then the French are also uncomfortable that the United States has so much power. France thinks the United States has so much power that the French language didn't have a word for it! There is also the issue of Americanization of their culture and the fact that most "Americans" are viewed as being boorishly insensitive to their culture when they do visit. It's more tit for tat at this point and the trading of insults is getting old.

A previous answerer got it right, "It's more tit for tat at this point and the trading of insults is getting old."

But here's something to think about.
Quote from The American Legion Magazine, "The Transatlanticist", October 2007 issue...
"Although he opposed the war in Iraq, Sarkozy has made it clear that he would not have acted like Chirac, who dispatched his foreign minister to organize international opposition against Washington. 'You must have loated us at that time,' he observed, adding, 'It's not appropriate to try to embarrass one's allies.'"

"'Chirac was obsessive about counterbalancing the U.S.,' Weinstein explains [CEO of the Hudson Institute and an expert on French and European politics]. 'Sarkozy does not believe that the French national interest requires opposing the U.S. on a regular basis.'"

The article also points out that there are some issues where Sarkozy and France disagree with the U.S.'s policies, however, Sarkozy seems to be reaching out in the spirit of goodwill. Hopefully the relations between the U.S. and French governments, as well between the people, will improve and we can all stop this name-calling.

The French helped us win our freedom during the Revolutionary war, this is correct, could we have won without them, that remains to be seen, they were there, that's what counts.
I think the debt was paid when our men, and women, went to France in 1918 and, settled the debt. Then again in the mid forties we went and, again, sent the Germans running and saved France, my father was there for two years, he was wounded.
We also helped, or at least took a hand, in rebuilding your country.
We asked for help with the problem in Iraq, what did we get? a slap in the face.

Getting a statue, please, don't think we're fools, we're not talking about getting a debt paid, we're talking about helping to save a Nation from a tyrant and, helping to keep so many of our own men and women from harm but, you turned your back on us, now, you and others are calling us names.

We're doing our best. If we left Iraq what would happen? can you answer that? please. My grandson is there, has been for three years now, he'll probably be getting the same response from people like you in years to come, from ungrateful people like you.

Whatever it once represented, the "Statue of Liberty" today is just another piece of obnoxious, multicult propaganda. It represents the American People's enslavement by the dark forces of globalism.

If I had my way, the filthy thing would be busted up and sold for scrap....

Because the French did not support the Iraq war, on the grounds that America's reasons for going to war were faulty. Then all the right-wing media in the US started up a heap of anti-French sentiment, which is still going even though they were proved to be right.

Thank you, cowboydoc, for stating it better than I could. The writer of this question has a habit of putting down Americans, I only wish he were brave enough to do that in the faces of a few of our troops.
