Please can anyone tell me where "gate valves" are fitted in a central heating system. I have had an excessive bill from a plumbing company who did very little other than mend a leaky pump. They have charged me £141 inclusive of VAT and I think this is excessive. They claim to have "supplied and fitted new gate valves to boiler". As far as I am aware it was just the pump that they repaired - about an hours work at most. How much is reasonable for this job?

Someone took a bit of a dislike to my boyfriend last week, it seems. Went out one day to find his car keyed (it's dark red metallic paint) and it seems like someone tried to break into the house too; one of the UPVC kitchen windows has a couple of small chips in the glass and some kind of marks that looks like someone's tried to pry open the window with a screwdriver or something.

How can we fix all this and how much will it cost?!

This happened once before, but we used drano and the problem fixed itself. We tried that this time, to no avail.

I own a 35 year old house that has never been updated. I can handle minor repairs but am becoming overwhelmed with bigger things needing attention. Any state or local programs to assist homeowners with repairs so the neighborhood doesn't lose property values? Who do you call and ask?

Sometimes when the toilet is flushed the water heater in the basement will make a loud banging rumbling noise and also when the bathroom faucet is turned on it will occasionally do it. Does anyone know what is causing this?

Toilet was clogged, i used a plunger all is well. on final "plunge" i heard a rattle i look and there's white porcelain(?) ball rolling around - i stuck my hand down there and pulled it out and that's just what it looks like. Is it supposed to be there? What does it do? Should I put it back? Any ideas why it would be there in the first place? Thanks!!!

This has been increasing over the last month. We have a new home, only 15 months old. Now, the kitchen faucets starts spitting water out and then goes constant. It is obvious that air is in the system, but how do I get it out, and where is it coming from. The problems seems to be getting worse.
