there are two main reasons a lawnmower wont start with the problem you have. first you may need to get a new air filter. second you may need to take the carburetor off and clean it. it's very likely the fuel flow is not enough to keep the engine running when you first start it.

get this problem allot. There is a screw in the bottom of float bowl. you need to turn it all the way in and count your turns. then take it all the way out. don't lose the spring on it. there is a tiny pin hole on it you need to clean. most of the time this will fix the problem. make sure you drain the gas tank or disconect the fuel line. then you can run the gas out of the carb.

do not spray either or any starting fluid into the mower! you are wrecking your rings and gaskets!! get your carburetor rebuilt or replace fule filter and air filter, check your primer ball

Bad primer bulb, or stuck open choke.
