I'm thinking of retraining for a career change & am wondering how physically demanding & dirty the work can get.

It was more the heath aspects of air-born dust I was thinking about, not dirty hands.

Yes, all that and more, but it depends on the size of firm you are with, a larger company will have apprentices and / or mates to do the semi skilled work. Half or more of my time on some jobs is spent doing strictly non-electrical works, then tidying up on completion, taking tools and materials off site etc. etc. (The other half is spent trying to find somewhere to park!!)

My husband is an electrician and yes, they do chase walls, lift floorboards etc. It can be very physically demanding work. the size and weight of cables used can also be difficult to lift/carry. It is not an easy option by any means. there is also a lot of mathematics and equations involved in electrical work. good luck in your career!

Domestic Sparky is a pretty clean job. They do chase out walls and the other stuff you mention, but its not that dirty.

Sparkies tend to leave the finishing to someone else, "owner to make good" is an ideal statement to get into your quote so they have to replaster and decorate.

Plenty of money and regular work in sparks, good luck.

an electrician will do whatever it takes...to get the job done. its very physical at times, dirty & dusty - but if you are worried about that - wear a mask over your mouth & nose.

its a great choice of career...as there is a shortage of them in this country...and hence, they earn very good money.

Yeah they do chase girls, lift skirts and put notches on their bedposts, and they can get as dirty as they like.

All of those things and more. You need to be physically fit, and not `girly` about dirty hands.
