How does woodland management differ from deforestation?
What are the benefits/disadvantages of well managed woodland?
Can we take a yield of timber without damaging the eco system or clearing the whole of the woods?
Is there a connection between health of a woods and varying 'ages' of trees from sapling to fully mature tree?

Coppppied from an online news source tonight : -

'The radioactive fallout from a nuclear accident that rocked Britain 50 years ago was underestimated, scientists say.

In 1957, a fire at the Windscale nuclear reactor in Cumbria led to a release of radioactive material that spread across the UK and Europe.

But new research claims the incident generated twice as much radioactive material and caused dozens more cancers than was previously thought.'
It scares the hell out of this old lady what do you think about it (Windscale/Sellarfield)

Lots of new couples are buying homes in my neighborhood. Suddenly, the whole block has a cloud of thick, gray, harsh smelling smoke. I guess it's romantic or a novelty for them.
So is it bad for the environment? I certainly feel like the air is polluted now. Is the amount of smoke going into the environment for 1 or 2 people to keep warm worth it? Especially when we no longer have to heat our homes that way?

It has been said that the honey bee population has decreased alot over the past few years. I have read an article which said that some type of virus may be the reason. Couldn't this play a big role in our environment? Could this be part of the reason why allergies our on the increase among Americans? I'm just not sure exactly how it could affect the pollen counts. Honey bees are seldom seen anymore. And now its dealing with pests such as Yellow Jackets and wasps. Since the population of these two insects is soaring in our area! I would much rather have the honey bees!

I am on the student council at my school and i am trying to make the school better for the enviroment. One of my ideas is putting up nest boxes in some of our trees. The school is in central Ohio and our trees include some soft bristle pines and some other decidous trees. I was wondering what kind of birds we should be able to attract, how to attract them, and how to make sure that we buy good quality nest boxes that will be easy to clean and stand up to weather, as well as be good for the birds too of course. I also need to know how far to space them apart so that i know they will all be used. please answer, the next student council meeting is coming up and i we dont have them very often so i need to be ready with ideas and facts etc. Thank you in advance for the help. I will pick best answer :)

I am a recent graduate in the geography and environmental planning field. Meaning, in college I studied maps, environmental hazards/studies, geographic information systems, weather systems, etc...

Right now I am working as a leasing agent at an apartment complex but this is not fulfilling at all.

Where should I look for entry level gis/environmental jobs?

I had one interview that analyzed flood risks (gis---sounded exactly what i want to do) but I could not take time off of work for the interview
