It blows every 600,000 years or so and it is about due. I would guess that it is about 1 in 50,000 that it would blow up in any year maybe less. It will blow but probably not anytime soon but you never can be sure.

We have many such active areas in this country. Mammoth is quite active and capable of a significant eruption. In fact, Mammoth is outgassing large amounts of carbon dioxide out of its South flank, near Horseshoe Lake, killing a fair number of trees in the area. The Long Valley Caldera is one of only a few places in the continental United States where magma comes intriguingly close to the Earth’s surface. It is one of only three locations in the conterminous U.S. where a major caldera-forming explosion occurred within the last million years (Yellowstone and Valles are the others).

The caldera formed as a result of a catastrophic eruption 760,000 years ago which emitted roughly 550 times the volume of pyroclastics than were strewn from Mt. St. Helens in 1980. The roof of the magma chamber collapsed, eaving a depression still visible today.

The economic and health impacts will be tremendous when it happens, but it could happen next week, or it could be 10,000 years. No telling.

it doesn't really matter if any ash reaches texas, because the whole midwest will be shut down. NO FOOD crops. Thousands of people will starve, thousands of others will be killed from roof collapse. we will definitely be affected. Michigan will probably get ashfall.

I am not a geologist. I personally predict that it will not happen at least not in our lifetime. Meanwhile we should continue to appreciate this amazing treasure.
