I can understand how a person might question global warming as the threat we need to be concerned about.

The certainties, the panic-stricken "What's new today on global warming?" questions might draw a laugh if they weren't such a troublesome indictment of the human intellect.

It's only fair to ask this question of those who are ENTIRELY CONVINCED global warming isn't happening:

I doubt there's a reputable scientist in the world who'd state emphatically, global waming doesn't exist. The same scientific data is available to both sides, and that data certainly doesn't deny the existence of global warming.

Scientists sort through what's available and try to reach meaningful conclusions from what they see. Many believe it 'probably' is not the problem.

I'd offer the observation that those here who are CERTAIN global warming "ain't" are guilty of the same sloppy thinking the they're condemning in those who do believe it.

Unfounded opinion is non-denominational?

I would consider switching to the CFL lightbulbs but I want to be sure I can notice a savings on energy cost before I make the investment of buying these new lightbulbs. Also, are you getting the same amount of hours usage as regular bulbs, do they last as long as tradition lightbulbs. Thanks all.

when someone starts speaking in their language around you. Do you think that their talking about you?

The reason I ask is because I know and understand another language, but can't speak it. But my parents can and they speak in loud voices, and when they do, people sometimes turn around and I wonder if they think my parents are talking about them. What do you guys think?

When a single species population dominates all others and [naturally] is driven to satisfy the needs of that population over those of other species, environmental changes are inevitable.

As the population of humans increases, more changes will occur. Energy resources will deplete, living space will take precedence over wildlife habitat, by-product pollution will swell to the bursting.

Struggles over maintaining balance between grain production and wild lands will always end with sacrifice of wild lands, because human beings are the main concern of human beings.

The population isn't going away, it's increasing and it's becoming more demanding. 3rd world wealth brings a desire for creature comfort, fossil fuels, refrigerated air television, automobile travel.

If global warming is one of the by-products of a burgeoning, wealthy human population, peeing in the sink to keep from flushing the commode won't help.

Do you see some solution to THAT?

I asked a more generic question earlier, and got some terrific answers as to why most people who deny Global Warming do so. Interesting, and lots to think about. (See http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070629091646AACc4D6 for those answers.)

But I realized that the answers didn't discuss a couple of aspects. Therefore, here is one about the political motivation.

I realize that President Bush is an oil man, and he and his people might have financial reasons to want to maintain an oil economy, but that just doesn't seem enough to explain to me non-oil politicians being against trying to save humanity from extreme climate change problems.

My question is clear: I want to understand the political motivation to keep denying the human need to work on slowing Global Warming. Please don't lecture me on why my premise is wrong. If you believe my premise is wrong, but have a good explanation for the political motivation, describe the politics-don't flame me for my position.

I was thinking and according to my knowledge, the answer would be "depends". They don't produce harmful gases (apparently).

The materials used in manufacturing electronic components create harmful gases and materials. Also power companies are required to power "refill stations" for cars. Generators need fuel too... So even more electrical issues...

So is the impact of electrical cars going to be more positive than negative?

I am curious to know if they rectified the industrial pollution problems.

If you want to really get a religious fanatic riled up, just mention that you don't buy his version of how many thousand years ago the world was created.

Have you noticed how similar that behavioral phenomenon is to the indictments, accusations, rudeness a person gets from those gentle greenies?

You don't have to deny their global warming God. You only have to say you aren't convinced they're right. You only have to say you'd like to see a better consensus of scientists.

Whenever humans react that way it's usually because they know there's a hole in what they're asserting you can drive a truck through. They react to civil discussion that doesn't accept their premise as though it were carved in stone with virulent hostility.

Just like religious fanatics.

How long do you suppose it will be before they're burning doubters, heretics, people unconvinced, at the stake?

temperature at which polar ice caps ceased to exist. Although the last time was millions of years ago (before the advent of humans), scientists now claim that deforestation and the burning of fossil fuels are bringing our planet to this same condition. If we are *certain* that these past events occurred naturally and were not the result of dinosaurs or other prehistoric earth life developing clear-cutting techniques and burning organic matter for fuel, why do scientists claim that the global warming that is occurring *now* is man-made rather than natural?

I have been experimenting with my doctor on a treatment that will work for me on a certain condition but in the process I have accumulated a cupboard full of bottles of pills. I don't know what to do with them and I asked a pharmacist and believe it or not but they told me to flush or bury them in the ground! Being worried about a child finding them and the envirnonment, I was wondering how do I dispose of them?

Global warming is FACT. It is not a theory.

It is caused by humans, and don't even TRY to mention that the polar ice caps of mars are melting, or that it is a natural cycle.

Global warming has happened in the past. Climate does change naturally. But the previous changes happened when the carbon dioxide levels were natural. Because of us, the atmospheric levels of CO2 are higher now than they ever were. We are now outside the realm of natural climate variation. More CO2 in the atmosphere leads to higher temperatures.

Given these facts, why do people ignore them and treat global warming like a theory? Why do they assume it's natural? IS IT REALLY THAT HARD TO UNDERSTAND?

"Imagination" is sarcasm in case it was missed and the following quote is the UN

Desertification represents one of the "greatest environmental challenge of our times" and could set off mass migrations of people fleeing degraded homelands, a United Nations report warned. The report said about 2 billion people, a third of the Earth's population, are potential victims of desertification, which is defined as land degraded by human activities like farming and grazing.

We are drowning in junk mail. If the junk mail industry isn't the world's (or at least the US') biggest contributor to deforestation and waste, it must be pretty close. A few years ago, while doing research on a case, I discovered that junk mail constitutes about FORTY PERCENT of American household waste; and the number must have gone up since then. Apart from the trees that are killed for this nonsense, think about all the energy expended in transporting the garbage, distributing it, then disposing of it.

The junk mail industry is a MAJOR contributor to deforestation, pollution, and energy waste. So why are activists so indifferent towards it? Contrary to popular opinion, the First Amendment doesn't go so far as to trump all conflicting interests. Yet, chop an acre of trees for construction timber, and you are an enemy of the environment. Waste a truckload of paper on stupid fliers that no one wants -- we act like it isn't happening.

Honestly, I am frustrated, surprised, and confused about why so many people refuse to recognize Global Climate Change (also called global warming) as a serious problem. I can barely understand why not all people are convinced that it has been made significantly worse by humans, but really don't get why anyone thinks humans are *incapable* of slowing it down.

No one who has seen the skies above smoggy cities has any problem noticing that we have created smog. And obviously, if we can create it, we humans can stop creating it!

The science showing that the cycles of global warming and cooling have never happened this fast are so clear--how can people say that this is "normal" when all the evidence shows that it is NOT normal at all.

Will the level of disaster that befalls our planet in order to prove this to the nay-sayers be so bad that by then, we probably won't be able to do anything to slow it down?

Why do some people insist on arguing total human inability to fix this problem?

I did some simple math and it looks like it would take me 8 years to break even on fuel costs for a honda civic sedan vs. a honda civic hybrid. Here are some of my facts: HC hy: $22,600; average mpg: 50mpg; annual fuel cost @ 15,000 miles per year: 900 bucks. honda civic 5 speed auto tranny: $19,500; average mpg: 35 mpg; annual fuel cost $1286. Cost difference $3,100. Fuel savings per year with the hybrid: $386. $3100/386=8 years. Why should I buy a hybrid and not the regular 4 cyl car? Oh I forgot to mention this is at 3 dollar gas prices. Oh and I don't really think that driving a hybrid is saving the earth. Help me out.
