Do you become nervous...?

Question

when someone starts speaking in their language around you. Do you think that their talking about you?

The reason I ask is because I know and understand another language, but can't speak it. But my parents can and they speak in loud voices, and when they do, people sometimes turn around and I wonder if they think my parents are talking about them. What do you guys think?

Don't get me wrong, I'm more than proud of my culture and language, I just want to know what people think in this situation.

NO! I don't think other people are thinking in those terms at all. I think what's happening (like you said) they're talking a little louder then most people. Although, ask anyone and they'll tell you I talk loud. When I get started in conversation I'll start talking louder depending on the conversation. Believe me, I'm always told to tone it down.

I remember my grandma, father and his three brothers sitting around talking German (of which a word I didn't understand) and it seemed to get louder and louder. I was just a small kid at the time. Now I wish I could have understood what they were saying. I'm sure they weren't talking about us kids. There were important things to talk about then us.

But you know how it goes when a group of people get together and everyone is trying to talk at the same time. There are always a few people who just have to turn around to see who are these people talking in a different language.
I think that's the cue, a diffrent language than their's. Don't feel imbarassed, the other people should because they're being rude by turning around instead of minding their own business. They can think what they want to think. That doesn't mean their right.

What! Does everyone have to talk in the same tone? I don't think so. It's never going to happen. I will never, ever believe these other people never talk loudly at times.

Let it roll .... it's not worth the worry.

I would be proud that my parents can speak another language and understand it as well.Most people only know one and that is the one in which there family taught them to speak at a very young age.although I can understand how you feel don't let it bother you.They might just be curious too.You never know.

Personally it's never worried me but I know many people who are irritated by loud conversations in foreign languages. Because many of these people are otherwise very nice and certainly not otherwise racist, I have changed my view on this.

I used to think a private conversation was nobody else's business, but now I think such behavior is impolite. I don;t think those looking around think that they're being spoken about necessarily, but it does seem to annoy a lot of people. And we shouldn't do things that annoy people if we can help it.

even though i can speak a different language i 'try' and speak english around other people as much as possible unless we are on a bus with 40 other people listening to your conversation because they have nothing better to do.

now obviously you need to learn not to look at someone and then say something and start laughing because that could definately be insulting.

i think depending on the circumstances it can be very rude, or just understanable and none of anyone else's business.

i think people who do that are rude.
my friends would do that all the time and if I was around I always thought that they were speaking about me because if they werent, then why talk another language.
they are not my friends anymore by the way. I dont need people like that in my life.

No I don't think that that is paranoia
i speak several languages and am often with people who talk in another language
when they talk about you you know soon enough ,because they keep looking at you
but when they are just talking in their own language because they are comfortable with it and not talking about you you can tell.

I know a lot of people are bothered by it. I'm not. If it is in public I feel people have the right to speak in whatever language they want to: It's in the first Amendment (The right to free association).

Anyways, as Oscar Wilde said "the only thing worse than being talked about, is not being talked about."

Hey, if they want to talk about me, that means I'm important enough to be talked about.

I would probably not like it because I would think they thought I was doing something wrong and were mad at me!
