I use my computer often in the afternoon after I come home from school- use it for 45 minutes, don't use it for 30 then use it again. Would it be more energy efficient to turn my computer off and then turn it back on again when I want to use it again, or just put it into stand by? A negative effect to putting it into stand by is sometimes I forget its in stand by and leave it like that overnight.

Another question related to this:

I can just shut my laptop lid with all the programs running and everything, and the laptop will go into like a "mini-stand by " mode- the screen goes black but all the programs appear within like 3 seconds after I open it. Is this version of the stand by, with a quicker start up time, more or less energy efficient than normal stand by? Normally when I shut it, I can still hear the laptop running for about 45 minutes, then after which it seems to go into a real stand by mode.

Thanks for taking the time to read all this! I hope I'm not too confusing.....

I try as hard as I can to turn my house green! I am only a teenager but I am trying to get my family into it. I recycle weekly and try to buy things that are good for the environment like paper instead of plastic, and if I do buy plastic I make sure it gets into the recycle bin. I have convinced my parents that as soon as we can trade in our car we are getting a new green one! YAY! We also buy cat litter that is internment safe we have a lot of cats!
What have you done to turn your house green? How hard do you try?
And any tips on how to preserve the earth a little longer!?

It's a well known fact that properties with double glazing reduce cold weather energy usage by a factor of as high as 40%.
When I lobbied my Social Housing Association to replace our old single glazed sash windows with secure, sympathetic, energy efficient double glazed units I was informed that it would spoil the image of the town!!!?
A closer inspection of the towns windows showed me that of the properties that I viewed only 3 were in fact double glazed the rest some 400 were all single glazed properties with sash windows most needing urgent repair.
It does not take a mathematician to see just how much energy could be saved if some 2000(min) windows were replaced with double glazing units, multiply this nationally and we could probably fulfil our Kyoto agreement 'quota' in a matter of a few years not decades.

I think it would be a easily exploitable source of revanue , plus cohesivley saving tons of tress from being cut down sence its replacing trees as the only sorce of paper .

Papyrus has i know a better future than tree cultivation sence a cut down tree is a 40 -60 even more year loss while papyrus plant gross fast like a weed and whenit is cut its only a 2 week loss ! (or something close too it i guess ! )

Living in theend times with lobal warming getting worse every day with no end in sight of reducing the eeffcets of it much less fixing thed amage that already exists and even more un heard of , of a way of avoiding this from happening agin !

So consideing all of the mentioned above im sure the modern day consumer would be more than happy to lend a helping hand by buying a alternative more eco freindly way of making paper (papyrus) and buy papyrus products instead of products like paper that come from trees.

Please excuse the bad spelling !

P:S thank youfor read

When you're out and about going for a walk, walking from your car to a store, at the park, etc. do you pick up trash that you see on the floor? Why or why not?

Do you only pick it up if there's a trash can near by? Only if it looks "clean." Only if you're in a beautiful nature preserve?

What does it take for you to pick up trash or litter?

Would it waste more enery to leave a light on for maybe an hour or to turn it on and off several times during the same time frame? I tend to run around the house doing various chores during commercials and wonder which would be less wasteful.

A few decades ago it was the onset of the next ice age.
Then we needed to save the whales.
Then the rainforests were at the forefront.
Now, it is global warming.

I understand that everyone has a cause that they feel passionate about. Whether it is AIDS research, famine, or your local PTA, whatever it may be. The doomsdayers have had their causes over the years too that must be addressed NOW in order to save all living creatures. The truth is, there are much more immediate and potentially devistating events, like a stray meteor taking out all living things on earth, that receive little to no attention from the doomsdayers--and are grossly underfunded to boot.

Why the focus on timely negatives?

Hello All,

Sorry, for the double post. Initially I posted to a wrong category.

I'm Austin, Texas. Planning to purchase a new home. Wondering what best energy efficient features I should asked the builder.

Have you done anything yourself? Economical?
What should I target mainly?
Solar? Ventilation?
Windows are huge in family room with high ceiling. What windows should I go for to protect myself in Texas heat?

One of the builder was saying they added 'Tech Shield radium sheet' to the roof and says it reflects light, and saves electric bill. Are those effective?

Any rebates or incentives goverment offer?

Thanks!

I have being hearing of a water powered car that uses electrolosis to to form hydrogen which is then used to power the car.

However to get the electricity in the first place surely fossil fuels must be used to produce it. (or perhaps not i don't know) If so what is the purpose of a water powered car?

I mean, you are technically littering, but the ice cubes will eventually melt and disappear.. It's as if you've never littered anything at all after a while..

Just curious..
