For some weird reason my entire life I thought that "svelt" meant fat. My entire life I have been using that word to describe a fat person, but just today (I'm 28) I discovered that it really means "Skinny". Also when I was a kid I used to think "bigot" meant someone who was cocky and arrogant. I hated Magic Johnson and would always call him a bigot because of what I thought it meant.

Are there any words that you have gone through life using incorrectly only to find out later that you were doing so?

I am doing research on my last name, and "-otta" is the suffix. I haven't been able to find info on it, only a bit on "-atti," but that was the closest, and I'm not sure if they are related. Any help would be great!

have noticed written on toothpaste or shampoo, or soap, or lipstick or cosmetics and stuff like that, there is written something like 12M, or 24M. what does it mean? it couldn't be months, cause some of those things have a warranty for more than an year. it couldn't be metres cause surely a lipstick doesn't have 24 metres. so? please help me. this drives me crazy for many years...

It seems as though when people are writing these days, either posting thoughts on the web, in an email or printing articles in a newspaper, there are careless spelling and grammatical mistakes that can be easily corrected before everyone else sees them. It leaves the person reading it to believe that either they are plain stupid or lazy. What do all of you think? I'm curious.
