I am doing research on my last name, and "-otta" is the suffix. I haven't been able to find info on it, only a bit on "-atti," but that was the closest, and I'm not sure if they are related. Any help would be great!

otta derives from Octavia and is used to denote the eight child born to a family. Going back hundreds of years when people were named after their profession, the area they came from or from physical traits such names were commonplace to enable identification of a particular child. The most common Italian names now are
Feminine Masculine
Maria Giuseppe
Anna Giovanni
Giuseppina Antonio
Rosa Mario
Angela Luigi
Giovanna Francesco
Teresa Angelo
Lucia Vincenzo
Carmela Pietro
Caterina Salvatore
Francesca Carlo
Anna Maria Franco
Antonietta Domenico
Carla Bruno
Elena Paolo
Concetta Michele
Rita Giorgio
Margherita Aldo
Franca Sergio
Paola Luciano

So if, for example Sergio's eighth child was named Paulo he could be named Paulo Sergiotta.
