i think some people are getting carried away with the singular "-us" and plural "I" nouns. really taking away an "i" and adding a "us", not just adding an "i"
but there are a great many verbs in the english language that can made plural ONLY by adding an "s"
i.e. the cars run on gas. (plural)
the car runs on gas. (singular)
but the verb "run" can also be singular in the case of the "I" pronoun.
i.e. I run in the morning.
this is the best answer that i came up for your question.

cares -- a plural word
caress - a singular word
(Geez, people! Read the question!)
A bunch more (not necessarily familiar) are abbes*, abys, adventures*, bas, bos, bras, bus, deadlines, esquires*, gamises*, his, larges, marques*, millionaires (multimilionaires*), moras, ogres*, princes*, saltines, sightlines, squires*, timelines. The ones with * are masculine plurals which, with -s add, become feminine singulars.

GREAT question. Obviously none of those above me have read, or understood, the question.
I can't think of the answer, but I can't wait to find out.
