It seems as though when people are writing these days, either posting thoughts on the web, in an email or printing articles in a newspaper, there are careless spelling and grammatical mistakes that can be easily corrected before everyone else sees them. It leaves the person reading it to believe that either they are plain stupid or lazy. What do all of you think? I'm curious.

Yes. E-mailing is just another form of communication. Poor grammar, spelling and pronunciation irks me in REAL conversation - the written word is no different. While speed may be the main goal, it doesn't take any more effort or time to just make sure you spell the word correctly in the first place, and is a bad habit to allow yourself to get into. I think it's just another symptom of the "dumbing down" of our society.

By the way....John P, I believe you meant "dining" not Dinning.

Yes, it does. Even more so on Yahoo Answers. There is a built in spell checker. There is no excuse for it. When I see posts or answers like that I immediately get the impression that the writer must be a high school dropout and their answer/opinion is probably worthless.

Yes. I had been in the spelling bee 6 times and 6 years in lifetime.
I had always won. When I was in sixth grade I was shocked to see my classmates misspell 3 easy words (psychology, optimism, and pneumonia). You remind me of my old gold ages. It's true the people are so lazy, they don't check their spelling. I love spelling. The most commonly misspelled words are electroencephalogram's are counterintelligence

Well, if they look stupid it's their fault. I've had people apologize for not using punctuation, capitalization, etc. They have said that that's just the way they type and you have to deal with it.

As far as it's acceptable, I think it's okay when instant messaging or texting is involved because those are meant to be fast. But e-mails and just about anything else bugs me.

I agree. Especially in newspaper articles. I can sort of understand and overlook it in e-mails, because the whole idea of e-mail is to be FAST. People are in too much of a hurry to correct spelling errors.

Yes, this drives me absolutely nuts! I always seem to find these errors even though I am not looking for them. What's even worse is when people use improper words that spell check won't catch.

Like Ensure or Insure

I saw an award today for the best Dinning facility, it was an engraved plaque. I almost couldn't eat there :p

Yes

Yes, though it's hard for me to say exactly why. I suppose I believe it shows a lack of respect for tradition and for one's audience. That leads me to feel resentful, because implicitly or explicitly I'm the one being disrespected. It also makes me sad, because I think that those doing it are limiting their own possibilities.

Others have other opinions, of course. Many can't understand what the fuss is about, or pretend they can't. See this Q&A, for example - http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Ao8RBF2W7U4msjlGmrC757fsy6IX?qid=20070124184455AAhb2i2

Yes, yes, yes!
It makes me think that either the editors are morons, or they paper/magazine is so cheap that they can't afford proofreaders.
