I can understand that it often affects children because that is when everyone starts to read. But how can it affect an adolescent or adult? How do they get away in elementary school not knowing how to read? If a person can't read, it would be obvious to the teacher. The teacher would refer them to special education and they are taught in a special way so they can read. So dyslexia wouldn't affect them when they are older. Dyslexia is caused by an unknown factor or factors. So an adolescent or adult is less likely to get dyslexia.

I grew up going to bad schools and I was told I had dyslexia, but when they tested me they didn't give me much info on it. I read things backwards. Like "I love going to the movies" sometimes it looks like "I going love Movies to the" Just all jumbled up. What type of dyslexia is this?

I have the problems with numbers too, I see 3241 when it is 1234. It takes me 5 times to reread something like a email I want to send off. I just don't know what type of dyslexia this is, Is there a name for it or is it just dyslexia?

Hi, I have had a speech problem for quite sometime. It just appears when I talk to people. Reading aloud or singing, its unnoticeable. I have a very high roof palate in my mouth due to my prematurity at birth, also had a major cross bite, overbite and MJF(or whatever the term is for jaw misalignment). I had speech "therapy", I guess you could say when I was in elementary, but as I got older I didn't get help. I got braces when I was 18 and my teeth are pretty much perfect, except I have a high roof still. After I got my braces removed, and during the time I had them my speech was worse than before. It is still very bad and I've had them off for over a year now. I would like to get speech assistance as I deal with the public a lot and hate people having to tell me to repeat myself or that they can't understand me. Would a speech therapist help me with this, or vocational rehabilitation or some service(as I am going back to college soon and cannot afford a high fee). Thanks so much!

Positively we have tried social stories but he still does it occasionally. It seems to be linked to doing something he doesn't want to do- leave the playground or start a worksheet.

I have been advised to try using lots more positive rewards for when he doesn't spit and does comply with requests. I am able to do this but other staff members don't agree and have more punative ideas for the behavior (a mask). I would appreciate any ideas people have.

This is a bias site so sad. I entered my son's data, he's
speech delay with no other developmental problems. If I
entered his speech delay levels, he has mild pdd, if he has
no speech problems, he's not pdd, what is that, not right at all. In this test, if you are speech delayed you might be autistic based on nothing else. My son is one of those kids who doesn't seem to want to talk, but understands EVERYTHING. So just because your child is speech delayed does not mean they are autistic. Too many people are jumping in to get an autistic label, when you really can get an accurate diagnosis until they are 4.

I have an 11 year old son, who at the age of six was diagnosed as having ADHD, with the addition that it was of the inatentive type. Around a year ago an assessment was carried out to see if his diagnosis would be more correct as an ASD, this was considered not to be the case. He will next September be moving to secondary school, and I am therefore trying within the limited facilities of where I live (Pembrokeshire) to find a facility that will best serve his needs. The local comprehensive has no special unit, but around 30 minutes drive away, Pembroke school has an Autistic unit, and a Special Learning Group. If my son's current dianosis, of DAMP is considered as an ASD by UK definition, I will try for a place in that unit, otherwise I will push for a place in the Special Learning Group. Things are a little desperate as I have only been notified that my sons diagnosis has been changed to DAMP by his primary school today! and I know so little about this!! it's been sprung on us today!

I was in regular class and failing everything.I asked
my mother why won't she go and talk to the school
about my trouble with school? She said she is afraid they will put me in special ed with all the trouble makers and she will not talk to the school.
She said you have to figure your way way out of your mess. Was that right? If your middle school
kid was having trouble wouldn't you go and talk to the school? Remember one thing this was in the 1970s with me.

I am doing a debate, and me and my partner are FOR mainstreaming and inclusion with disabled kids (not separating disabled kids and regular kids, but keeping them together).
We need to
-anticipate arguements that the team against us will make
-make arguements of our own on why we want mainstreaming and inclusion
-come up with questions for the other side, for example, if they use the arguement that "disabled kids are a distraction to class", we would ask them, "well, wouldnt you think that it is more distracting when a kid is sitting in his desk with his cell phone or iPod out?"

anything you have i will appreciate!!
thank you so much!

My daughter is 6 1/2 and gets speech services through the school district. She has a frontal and lateral lisp and her IEP is written for t, s, l, r, digraphs, and blends. (In sum, she speaks like Sylvester and Tweety all rolled into one.) Two questions for which I'd like professional advice:

1. Her t, s, and digraphs improved drastically after ear surgery. But her speech teacher will not even start working on the lateral lisp until she turns 8. So progress has leveled off at this point. What can I do at home to keep up the momentum?

2. Her spelling is terrible!!! Our school uses "kid spelling;" children are taught to sound out words then an adult puts the correct spelling above it. So she writes the way she speaks. How can I help her, particularly with l and r which the school will not address for another year and a half?

Please fellow posters--learn what this term means! Special Ed (in the English context--which is important to understand as this is the English forum) refers to the education, support, employment and issues that are unique to children and adults with physical, emotional, developmental, or medical disabilities. If your question doesn't pertain to these, you are in the wrong section and might not be able to get the answers you need.

Postings requesting info on the many MBA's, Indian education programs, and foreign study are best suited for the HIGHER EDUCATION forum.

England 8 year old boy
My grandson who is naughty at school and at home has been restricted to 1hour and 20 minutes school each day, 08:55 to 10:20.
Does any one know if the school can do this without offering an alternative to meet his educational needs and or what are her options? I know he is bad and understand the schools stance, she tried to get him statemented and the school said there was no need about a year ago.
What if any rights has she any help please. England

We just found out that my friends 4year old boy has autism. I don't see him very often (maybe once a month?) and when I do see him I think he does like me. But there is a big communication barrior. I'm wondering if there is a way I can approch him to make things easier on him and to make more comfortable with me? I don't know much about this dissorder so any advice is welcome. Thankyou so much in advance for all of your help!

Oh, and please do not say stuff like treat him the same way he has always been treated. I'm not going to treat him badly or like he is below anyone else, that was not my question. I just want to know if there is a way to make things better. Thanks again!

Last year in 8th grade, I almost got straight A+s (2 As and everything A+s. However, this year I've been stressed out because of social issues and was unable to focus on anything so my grades had dropped significantly. For the first quarter report card, I got almost got straight Bs and only two As. From tenth grade, I want to go to a boarding school in america (I really need to focus on academics) and I want to know what schools would be best for me.
Any recommendatons for me? (the best boarding school I can possibly get in if I aim for straight As for the rest of the year in 9th grade).
