I took on a family member who is a 16 year old male and it is not working out for us. He has made some good progress. But, he is very behind acedemiclly, impulsive and has some issues with authority figures. I am looking for a good residental placement for him. What are the pros and cons of Job Corp or these type of places?

I read an article in TIME or something (my friend showed it to me), about how the School System is failing now, and I must agree.

Thanks to the NCLB (No Child Left Behind) program, we are spending millions to push ahead kids that NEED MORE TIME to learn! I understand wanting people to graduate instead of fall back, but they really need to be in special classes pertaining to their NEEDS, not the School's wants.

And because of this program, Honors and Advanced Placement programs are falling fast. In the article, a girl was tested at age 7 with an IQ well over 145. In first grade, when other people were learning how to read, she was learning ALGEBRA II. She should have been in college by age 12, but they would not allow her to skip more than two grade levels.

I find this ridiculous. People with special needs, whether it is a lack in ability to learn at an "average" pace, or an IQ that falls off the charts, need to be helped! This NCLB is only making our school system decline furt

they did not want you there if you had trouble learning. I have a GED but nothing other and done
OK in life,I make 40K a year. I wanted to do better
in school but why was my desire alone not enough?
I tried to go through Burea vocational rehabilitation
when I was 19 and they told me forget the GED.

If you happen to have a deaf child in future, which school setting would you send your kid to; a Deaf residential school, a public school with mainstream program (in an all-deaf classroom), or a public school with an interpreter

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Despite an individualized education plan and supposed accountability, public schools in Georgia did not, could not and would not teach my daughter to read. Only when I put her in private programs did she begin reading.

I have worked for 12 years to hold the public schools accountable to help all children learn, but the system is broken.

In a recent case I’ve been working on, a Fulton County public school praised the progress of a 10-year-old with high normal intelligence who could only read 100 words in isolation. Yet, this 10-year-old passed the state-mandated tests last year because teachers read the questions to him. The sad truth is this child could be taught to read.

I have helped parents in so many counties, and I see similar situations every day. I’ve worked with parents who moved to Georgia and were appalled at the ineffectiveness of special education here. Our state is known

In this present climate of inclusion I feel the demands and expectations of teachers are too high. Do teachers feel that they have enough support and guidence in teaching such a variety of special needs within the mainstream classroom.

get easier as I got older it kept getting more difficult? Why did people tell me to give up?
I guess 30 years ago that was a common practice
because there were not the resources. My parents
gave up on me too, told me I was nothing but a
disappointment to them. I never did well on tests,
I did not know how to study. what happened
to being older and wiser then school should get
easier not more difficult.

Why dont school administrations respond to parents! I had to call the DOE and file a complaint in order to get my sons school to grant him Section 504 modifications! The school originally denied him even though I have a diagnosis from a ped neuroligist who corresponded with the school and his teacher has sent home notes about his ability to stay on task. And let me tell you, 24 hours after I called, I got a very nice call from the principal(who was a part of the denial meeting) saying, I took another look at your sons file and i am truly sorry there was such anoversight, he DOES qualify, we will get the SST meeting done this week. WHY? Is this strictly a funding issue, or do schools REALLY not want kids to be successful?

Mainstreaming has caused bullying and school shootings to start. Mainstream schools group students based on ability. That is how bullying starts. The "real" inclusion encourages all students to LEARN together. Therefore students are NOT encouraged to bully. Students would be a lot happier when everyone is taught to learn together.

Mainstreaming is the practice of educating students with special needs in regular classes during specific time periods based on their skills.

Inclusion is the practice of educating students with special needs in regular classes for all or nearly all of the day instead of in special education classes.
