I read an article in TIME or something (my friend showed it to me), about how the School System is failing now, and I must agree.
Thanks to the NCLB (No Child Left Behind) program, we are spending millions to push ahead kids that NEED MORE TIME to learn! I understand wanting people to graduate instead of fall back, but they really need to be in special classes pertaining to their NEEDS, not the School's wants.
And because of this program, Honors and Advanced Placement programs are falling fast. In the article, a girl was tested at age 7 with an IQ well over 145. In first grade, when other people were learning how to read, she was learning ALGEBRA II. She should have been in college by age 12, but they would not allow her to skip more than two grade levels.
I find this ridiculous. People with special needs, whether it is a lack in ability to learn at an "average" pace, or an IQ that falls off the charts, need to be helped! This NCLB is only making our school system decline furt

decline further.
Sorry, ran out of room.
By the way, I am graduating this year, and am 17 years old. This is not the perspective of a school teacher or adult, or someone with a child who has special needs. I would like to hear more angles and opinions.

Thank you for an intelligent response!
I wasn't bashing on NCLB ONLY. I think there is a major problem with Education nowadays- I know for a fact I almost dropped out and am just barely passing every class.... While being extremely intelligent. I get, and have gotten, a 95 or above on every text or quiz i have ever taken. I am just so thoroughly apalled with school that I refuse to do homework, etc. I don't need it! I know everything!! If I know the information, i'm not about to do -extra work-. I'd rather be studying for college, online, reading, at work, etc. I have no time for thinks I do not NEED to do.
Therefore, I fail. I am glad this is my last year. At least in college, they go off of SAT's for your classes, not JUST your school grades. Because high school does not make sense to me.

I was raised in Pennsylvania, even if I live in New Jersey now, so I do consider Gifted as a Special Need or Special Education. I'm tired of Special Ed being "Sped" kids, or moron kids. I say i'm a Special Education child to see what people say, and most people will ask if i'm ESL, dyslexic, behavioral issues, etc... Then get confused when I tell them i'm more intelligent than the majority of my teachers, and have had to explain to Therapists what my issue is, and what should be done. Every therapist i've ever had never really needed to do anything except agree with me, listen, and prescribe medication. They didn't really even need to do a professional diasgnostic, i'm intelligent enough to know i'm Bi-Polar, Depressive, Paranoid, and have SEVERE insomnia. I could have been in college years ago, but the school system fails me horribly.
I've been asking since 2nd grade to be homeschooled, by the way. My parents did not attempt to nurture me, either.

Redblack, I feel her pain! I was labelled as "gifted" when I was 12. Everyone thought I was retarded because I got awful grades (I was so bored by the work, I never did it, just drew all over it xD) and did not associate with kids in class well. Then I got my IQ score taken, and everyone was astonished. The person who administered the test divulged that I really belonged in 10th or 11th grade, not 6th. I was already doing some Calculus on the IQ test, and correctly! Even though nobody ever taught it to me and I was doing awful in my classes. I never went into AP classes simply because I refused to do homework and was always getting suspended due to not fitting in. I was labeled as a "trouble child"...
I, as well, have always had friends years older than me. I am only 17, yet some of my closest friends are my father's age!! Don't be disturbed by this, let her have her older friends. and i'm always here, and i've got instant messengers, if she needs anyone to talk to! Thanks <33
