Hello, we learned a little over a year ago that our son was autistic. Last year we moved to North Texas and learned about Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) which we enrolled our son into. They are great and we started to see improvement as well as receive some coaching ourselves. A little after we enrolled with Our Children's House (Baylor) and the improvements were even more noticeable (We love you Stephanie!). A couple of months ago we had the 599 test for our son and we have medically confirmed that our son is in the autistic spectrum (we already knew). With all this we enrolled with Frisco ISD Special ED where they have a small class for autistic children. It is not going well. They have been very patronizing with us and it appears that their philosophy is to "hammer" adaptation into the children. This only stresses our son more and we have seen bad behavioral changes. What they do is an abosolute mystery since they claim that ALL processes are covered by privacy laws. Any help?

My 12 year old son needs toturing so bad. And I can not afford it. Due to illness in the family I am snowed under in Medical bills. We have no medical insurance. Anyhow he has severe learning disabilities and I can not find any scholorships to help. Does anyone have any ideas? He is such a sweet child and not a behavioral problem at all. If i had to describe him I would say he is extremely talented. And his IQ is above average. He just can not get it from his head to the paper. Thanks to one and all in advance

I have 3 children with autism and one doctor wonderd if I had autism as well. Looking at my medical files he noticed I was diagnosed with ADHD-Anxiety and Depression..He told me these could easily be masking any assesment that I was Autistic.....At 37 this is a bit hard to deal with. Are there standards docs use to look at adults in my situation?..

My son is 4, he has good sentence structure but poor word structure. We are having his hearing checked this week and he will be evaluated by a school speech therapist. My concern is the school can't put in the time that a private therapist can. also to get help through the school the gap must be pretty large. We are still trying for a private therapist should we just go with a private one and take the help from the school while we wait?

reading problem? Latley, I have been having this reading problem where it seems like when I read, the words get mixed up. Like out of order. For example, if the sentence was, "The dog chased the cat." I might see it as, "The chased dog the cat." It started maybe the beginning of 10th grade, and I don't know what it is. I am not in special ed. I am in all regular academic classes(although I have trouble keeping up with the classwork.) Do you know of anything like this?

thanks :)

i am reading this book called "the curious incident of the dog in the night" by mark haddon where the main character in the book, christopher,is an autistic 15 year old and on page 24 he starts talking about how seeing 4 RED cars in a row make it a good day and he goes on saying how there are black days when he is upset so i was wondering if autistic children or teens relate or determine emotions or feelings due to colors?

ABA, he has tutors who come to him for 2 hours Mon-Fri. ) Today by asking me and interacting with him she says he is on the "autism spectrum". Thinking about it..I have no idea what the heck that means. She said stick with getting the help and he will improve his skills. WHAT THE HECK DOES "AUTISM SPECTRUM" MEAN? Can someone tell me in English what that means, please?

The more I read on these boards, the more I get afraid for my son. Is it common for Asperger's to get suspended? How do I protect my son when another student bullies and my son defends himself? I just know one of these days he's going to run into one of those situations. He's come real close to lashing back at a kid that tripped him then punched him in the stomach. My son couldn't point him out because there were a lot of kids around when it happened. It's not the first time he's been bullied he was just never acted on them with anger. He's really a nice kid who cares about other kids and will stick up for them if he's sees them being bullied. It's just nobody sticks up for him...not even the teachers. I've been told it's something he has to deal with because of his condition. I am more afraid of him getting hurt real bad from getting beat up than I am of him getting suspended. Anybody else going through this? What can I do? What can my son do? What does the school do?

According to recent research, trends in ABA are moving towards a social-cognitive approach or inclusion of the consideration of mind, thought, and internal behavior... More of how thoughts influence behavior and how to treat accordingly.

Oxymoron or realistic, functional application? A science that prides itself on treating observeable behavior now lending itself to the science of the mind, including mental illness, stress, anxiety, history...

I know ABA currently accounts for condition of mind when evaluating behavior insofar as it accounts for EO, satiation, etc, but the research has never dedicated itself to such an internal evaluation of behavior.

Thoughts?

I've been a care provider for many years and seena wide range of needs. However. the latest person sent into my care has a behavior I don't know if I can deal with. I'm hoping someone else in this field has encoutered such issues and can advise me in the right direction for some help. Ill warn you in advance, the issue pertaining to this individual are not pleasent, but they are real.

To make a long story short, this person will intentionally vomit their meals after they eat. This indivdual has a functioning level of a 2-3 year old child, but is an adult. So behavior modification, intervention has had no success. Basically anything that goes down, comes back. This person has to eat constantly to meet nutritional requirements. Are there any medical procedures, or other intervention methods that can be done to help the situation. I am ready to give up care for this person, as it is just too much. Any advise is appreciated.
