I have never heard of this happening, and I doubt that it has. But I'm being fair and at least asking. :)

I've talked to several mothers, and read stories from many others, whose autistic children have "recovered" after receiving homebased ABA therapy. Their kids aren't 100% better obviously, but they're almost indistinguishable from their peers.

So do any of you know of a child that has improved significantly after being in an autism class in a p.s.? I would think it's near impossible, with the almost complete lack of individualized attention, you know?

My 4 yo son is autistic. I've been giving him therapy myself at home, and he has shown improvement. I think he would just "spin his wheels" in a p.s. autism class. I am trying to line up professional ABA therapy though, because I feel like I've done all I can do alone, you know? But I'm being pressured to put him in an autism class in p.s. But do the children in those classes EVER have a chance of improvement?

The attendant has been complaining to her mother recently about her behavior. She has been diagnosed at various times as autistic, developmentally delayed, and the most recent one, as mentally retarded with an IQ in the 40s. The student's mother started having her 5-year-old son ride on the ESE bus so she could know more about what was going on. Well, one day the above incident occurred.....the student was yelling and the bus attendant told her to be quiet, then the student yelled defiantly and the bus attendant walked over to her, slapped her on the arm, shook her, and told her to shut up. When they got to school the brother and another child on the bus reported the incident to their teachers. The school principal, VP, etc. watched a video from the bus and although the quality of the video was poor, the video matched the story the children told. What punishment should the attendant receive? Suspended? Fired? Criminal prosecution?

If they can be taught, does that mean that other special needs people can also be taught using the Montessori method? People have told me that the Montessori method is only used on people without special needs.

I work in a child care center and we have kindergarteners that come at lunch. One of my k kids is afraid to eat in the lunch room because she is afraid of one of the special ed kids. I would like to help her through this by doing a lesson for the whole group about understanding disabilities. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Our Autism Society is having its annual meeting. I am presenting an award and the first line of my speech is "As a parent, I am always uncomfortable when people start throwing around words like 'hero' and 'saint', because it usually means they are not planning to help.'

Is it fine on its own, or does it need explanation?

(If people think you are heroic, they believe you are doing things they would not be able to do, so they don't want you to ask them to help. People with autism can sometimes be a bit high-maintenence)

My son is four and has autism. He has been getting occupational therapy since about 18 months old. Over the summer, we moved to a new school district. They are not going to provide any OT for him, since they can't figure out any "goals" that would require it. However, his last school's occupational therapist did a "Floortime" model of OT with him and helped him with sensory issues, which helped him to learn more about social skills and learn better the rest of the day. What can I do? Is there anywhere that lists the benefits of OT for autism?

he seems to have PDD (not diagnosed yet officially ). He is a very smart boy but seems to be too stressed out by not KNOWING 'what comes next'. He can do everything independently as long as either I do it with him or better yet he has a picture symbol schedule. And any sites I could use? Thanks so much. I could send him to public school but this catholic school offered to take him and it is small and will remain small classes - under 10 till 8th grade - something I think he also needs.

what ways can we use them so when he is out in public he can inconspicuously follow his schedule of picture symbols. Can I use a key ring of sorts or is there technology for this? He is mainstreamed at catholic school and asked me if he could start using this at school too. I want him to shine like I know he can and this will help. Any ideas of different ways to use a picture schedule for a normal functioning child who needs help .

Hello, I am a special education teacher that is fighting wiht the regular education teachers about extended time on homework. If a special ed students gets the same assignment as his/her peers, what is a reasonable amount of time to get it in? We have teachers giving detentions based on missing work w/o calling the parent or telling me. If you have any information or have a website that I can print and send to my boss, PLMK. I am to the point where I want to quit it is so bad! These kids can't do the work and the IEP is not being followed. Now I have to go to the next teacher's meeting to present my case in front of the district. I am in the minority. Please tell me how you deal with this and what your policy is.

Thanks

We are in IL and my son in an out of district school placement. He has only gained one year of progress on academic testing in 4 years, despite superior IQ score. I would like to request a different placement or at the least a computer aided cirriculumn so he can gain progress in the areas he excels, and have visual aid in the areas he needs help, and also for accountability and to assess progress and his difficulties. Can I do this just on the basis of him being academically behind? Even though it's not an IEP goal?
