Pick a Public School that interests you and talk to the principal and ask if you can observe in and special education class. Sit and watch the teacher interact with the special ed students. Also observe the students and how they interact with the teach.
Observe how the students interact with each other. Special Ed classes are usually smaller in the number of children, so you can pretty much watch how an individual student reacts to his/her school environment. Then move on to the next student.
Watch for bullying from other students who are not in Special Ed. Can guarantee you will find this kind of behavior going on all day long, especially at lunch time. Bullying is a well know problem especially for the parents of Special Ed students. Don't know how open the school faculty will be on the subject of bullying.
That my assignment to you. Good Luck
Could be a real eye opener.

You can go to the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis and you could do a research project on the efficacy of using applied behavior analysis to produce language in autistic children.
If you have access to students, go to several classes and research the methods teachers use to manage behavior and evaluate which ones you think are the most efficacious.

Why support isn't given to SPED teachers?
Why so many parents of SPED students have to "train" teachers to work with their children?
What resource teachers do?
Why or why not a cross categorical class exists/do they work?
Mainstreaming issues.
