I started to work as an aide teacher to this very special kid for 5 days now. He is combined with regular student in a very prestigious international school here in China. I really have the compassion to transform him to a better person. Unfortunately based from my evaluation He ONLY recognized authority from the male group, and me being a female aide needs a lot of time to break that habit. I know slowly and through proper conditioning and reinforcement I can do it. My problem now is the class teacher as well as the majority of teachers who have no idea about such case, who expect too much from me... criticizing the way I handle the kid.. as if I could change the kid overnight, not realizing that I'm still on the stage of knowing his routine, studying the cause of his meltdown, tantrums etc. I have an experience in handling a child with passive autism and its extremely different. I just want to have an idea HOW TO STOP & CONTROL THEM WHEN THEY START TO RUN.

I've never worked with a student with this before but now I have five students with this. Any tips or advice to share? I've been doing lots of research and I know what works with autistic students. Any suggestions? What do you think that I really need to know about aspergers to be a good teacher?

My son is in the 5th grade and I need an advocate that knows the state and federal laws for my state and school district. I know there are people who help you with school problems who are not part of the school district. They are advocates for the parents. Anyone know where I could go to find one for my state, Nevada, Clark County School District.

If so how did you get on. My 7 year old son is doing it and is a few months in. At the moment the only big improvement is his eye tracking. I am happy if that is the only change but wondered if people have had big changes after a longer period of time.

My boyfriend has severe dyslexia. Supposedly. He went to shitty schools in New Jersey that I suspect didn't really try to help him too much so I'm not sure if he actually has really bad dyslexia or if it's managable but his schooling didn't help him find a way to deal with it. Either way, his reading is really, really bad. Practically non-existent. I want to help him somehow. It's so weird seeing him struggle on a daily basis because he can't read or write. It's like missing a sense, not being able to see or hear. I just have no idea where to start! I got him a couple of those reading workbooks for 1st graders and I bought some index cards so we can make customized flashcards for words he needs to be able to read such as local streetnames, ATM vocabulary, etc.

Jobs? Directions? Reading a bedtime story to our children someday? This is serious.

I was substitute teaching in a special education program. The regular SPTA was out. A male SPTA from another class was sent in to help with diapers. He refused to change any of the girls. He said he was not comfortable and felt it was inappropriate for him to change a girl. Two girls had to wait for almost an hour for another assistant to come change them. I did not change them because I could not get all of the other 8 children into the bathroom and keep them all safe while changing the two girls. The office staff agreed with him said he should not be changing girls only boys. All of the boys in the class were toilet trained.

Do you think it will have any bearing to a special needs childs interest, if the same peaditricain that he sees sits on the special needs panel in a local edcuation authority?
I only this because a friend of mine did not get a diagnosis for her son who is clearly on the autistic spectrum range from this peaditrician and could not get the help he needed for school.I on the other hand went with my son who and has now been diagnosed as having aspergers syndrome, but this was only after disclosing the fact that my son was now home educated as we where not listened to in regards to his specific needs in the school sytem.
I am a bit puzzled how you cannot be biased when you are working for 2 different authorities ,the edcuation authority and the local health authority.
Not too sure if they get paid for sitting on this panel maybe someone out there may be able to shed some light on this area.
Look forward to your thoughts and ideas.

I know there is a shortage of special ed teachers in the US. But, it's such a large area. Can I specialize in ADHD and learning disabilities? I am looking into getting a master's, but my interests are specific.

What do you think about the NCLB Act? - Is it working, why or why not? What is it doing for the average students? What is it doing for the above-average students? Do schools give the mentally impaired kids special tests so that they can get more funding? Do schools get more money if more students are in advanced classes? If so, why don't they make as much of an effort to find early geniuses as they do to find early below-average children? etc.
Thanks

My son is 25 and he is autistic and his computer broke down. He is low income and only gets SSI monthly to live on. He lives in Arkansas and would like a computer to help him out, especially connect with others and help with reading and math. Does anyone out there know of an organization where he can get a free or low cost computer? I know there are organizations that donate low cost computers to the elderly and disabled. It can be an old one as long as it has internet access. Thanks much.
