My Niece has been diagnoised with Autism and was referred to come back to New Jersey. Where she was living (Missoouri) said they have great programs in NJ that can help her. Well she was told that a certain school would be where her daughter could attend and they had a program for autism. Now on the first day they sent her home and said they don;t have programs and they would do only 5 hours a week in the home. WHAT!? they also said they have to evaluate her and do an IEP in the home. I am a general education teacher going for my masters in special ed. (I have alot to learn that;s for sure) but when I was teaching kindergarten we had students being referred for autism and they did IEP(s) right in the class? Why are they keeping this 5 year old girl out of the school and keeping her "restricted"? Is this supposed to happen before they can place her in a school. She is already 5 and needs the structured educational enviroment!! How long will the keep her away from education?

I read in medical documents that I was mildly mentally retarded. I know I was in Special Ed. But is it possible a mildly mentally retarded person can graduate from high school with a 3.6 GPA with honors & have a college degree? That's what I did.

He has been evaluated and qualifies for PPCD, but not OT. He is now in Head Start, and they're going to "screen" him to see if a full-eval is warranted. I'm afraid he won't qualify again b/c he can sit, color, etc. However, he is extremely lacking in focus, doesn't have the ability to sit for more than a minute, and he has problems with fine motor skills. For example, he's potty trained, but cannot pull his own pants down/up.

What sorts of things should I emphasize to the OT so that I can improve my son's chances of qualifying for OT? Any ideas??

He has seen lots of doctors/neurologists. We have no diagnosis--maybe speech apraxia and possibly ADD.

Thanks for your help!

My daughter has Asperger's Syndrome. She has been attending a mainstream school for the last 6 years, but it has not been working for her due to bad teaching and bullying. She was offered a trial placement at Sutherland Shire Montessori School, and we accepted it. However as independent schools receive little funding for children with special needs, she was not able to continue with the trial and was not offered a permanent place at the school. I am now wondering if I should have just kept her in the mainstream school. This experience has left her feeling very rejected and quite depressed. Last night she was talking about killing herself if we can't find a cure for her Asperger's, and today we found her looking up ways to commit suicide. I am home schooling her from now on as there is no other option, but she just wants to go back to Montessori. Have I made a huge mistake that will last her the rest of her life? I am feeling really bad about it and scared for her future.

I am a SPED teacher and need help with high school reading. I have two students, 10th and 12th, who read on a 3rd grade level. I am looking for material to use so that I can increase their levels. I only get about $100 to buy needed materials. What are your suggestions? We have accelerated reader but that is it. I would like to increase their levels as much as possible. Is their anything free on the web? Does anyone know where or by whom that I could get a computer program donated? I need help!

Thanks for input!

One person answered me in another posting just
because they are promoted does not mean they passed. Why promote them? It is time to stop making excuses for kids with LD and try to find
a way to teach the same high standards to them
but present the high standards in a different way.
I am not talking about mentally retarded or slow learners, but kids with moderated learning disabilities. In my time I gave up on school because school gave up on me.There was no
help in my time. I fell through the cracks and
society still holds me accountable for something
I had no control over. Do you all think I am uneducable and beyond help. Why is it my fault?
I use to be told it was my fault for not trying harder?

I dont know how to treat her , should i be firm and treat her like any other kid ;no means NO or with special treatment because she is really not responding to me; she leaves classroom without permission etc...

I should rephrase my question. I live in an area where there are almost no sidewalks and absolutely no buses, I cannot get my D.L. because I fail the tests constantly and damaged about every single car the DMV has. I cannot take courses anymore cause I ran out of my money, neither can i pay for a cab or anything. The job that I could get (that would hire someone with L.D.) is too far to walk. I cant get there on a bike as I need to take a highway to get there but its impossible to drive the bike. I cannot pay for a cab either. Are there some government agencies that can help me out? Pay for a car or place me in a carpool or something?

I am tired of all of the conflicting information. It is awful that there is no official diagnosis and he has been seen at a prominant childrens hospital regularly, the school evaluations, the random evaluatuions at places without his history ( so he can be taken at face value). Everyone contradicts eachother and I am at a loss. ( these are all conflicting Dr's. words not mine each Dr. has stuck by his or her opinion for years) Velo Cardoi Facial disorder, but no facial similiarities and only palipitations, and no genetic back up, Kabuki Syndrome but no features, Mental Retardation I.Q 52-63 with low muscle tone , but tone is okay it is loose joints, and OCD , no it is Autism, no because you can not have Autism and M.R. , delerium seizures no that is not it it is a frontal lobe, syndrome features, no he looks like his father, I could go on .. I need to know what is the problem so that I can find the best solutions. I can not find a support system for family's with this issue

I did not sign My son's IEP because they took services away that were obviously necessary but because recommendation of 1 staff was that she didn't see need for it they took it away, but then they said they would try to get my SARC to pay for it. Hello??? doesn't that make it seem like the only reason they took it away was because they didn't want to pay? anyways I didn't sign and the school psychologist said that now his services are frozen. Is that legal? Don't they have to implement last years iep since i didn't agree to these changes? what happens if we don't agree to the new one and don't want to sign? Help!!!! thanks

In New York, we take Regents but special education students don't have to pass all of them. They can just take the RCTs. And if they didn't pass the RCTs, they would just get the IEP diploma. Therefore, the No Child Left Behind Act DOESN'T affects children with special needs!

Hoping someone can help. I checked wrightlaw.com and cannot find the answer there. Does anyone know what the maxiumum # of special ed kids/classroom is? Is there a law about that. I have a 3.5 year old son (nonverbal/autism) who the school ditrict is planning on placing in a class with 10 other kids and 3 teachers. I called a month and a half ago to reconvene his IEP and requested 1 teacher to 3 kids. They did not return my calls or corresp. Now, we are meeting on Friday and they lay this on me. I just don't believe my son will a. be safe with that many kids in a room b. learn anything

Just want to know where I stand as far as the law goes B4 the mtg Friday. Thank you in advance
