Schools ONLY do testing to see if a child qualifies for special education services. THey do NOT do testing to 'diagnose' learning disabilities.
Although, something could show up in the testing that they do for special ed eligibility.

Testing can be done privately; usually by a psychologist, but it's expensive. Testing can also be done through the school system. Contact the special education department for more information.

A school psychologist or private psychologist.

In order to get testing by the school psych, a Child Study Team (It may have another name in your state,) has to make the referral, after a process. Ask your school counselor about how to get that started.

In the U.S. if your child is struggling you can request one through the school district at no charge. Otherwise privately a child psychologist which may or may not be covered by health insurance.

Mostly it was the public school's school psychologist, but it quickly became a team effort between them, myself (parent), & private doctors.

I personally, found the most thorough to be the school psychologist and one particular insurance carrier we had at one point (Kaiser).

If you take the child to thier ped then they would be able to refer you to the correct source. But from research that Ive done myself, the best canidate would be a child phycholgist.

'my son started with a hearing test. then to a special audiologist. then went to school for diagnostic kindergarten. then to the chop hospital.from there we moved to NJ put him in school they reviewed all testing and put him in a excellent special ed program. he went to one of the best public special ed schools in the state.so start with your doctor, a psychologist and the school. remember you are your child's best advocate. never back down fight for what your child needs. good luck and hang in there.
