Im a teacher and one of my students is a 5-year-old girl, and i think with autism...She is not responding to her name, no eye contact, she does not play with other children,she seems to be living in her own lonely world walking around the classroom all day uttering only few words from time to time to herself. I dont know how to treat her , should i be firm and treat her like any other kid ;no means NO or with special treatment because she is really not responding to me; she leaves classroom without permission etc...

I would recommend that you request an evaluation from your school system to see if this child has autism. Early intervention is VERY important! Research has indicated that an early diagnosis is associated with dramatically better outcomes for individuals with autism. The earlier a child is diagnosed, the earlier the child can begin benefiting from specialized intervention approaches in treatment and education.
I am a mother of a child with autism who was not diagnosed until he was 13 years old although his teacher suspected autism and never requested an evaluation. Precious time was lost in getting my son the proper help he needed and I can't help but think that he may be further along if his teacher had spoken up.
I applaud your efforts to learn more about how to help this child. Yes you do need to be firm and treat her as any other child, but at the same time she does need special treatment. Even a child with a disability needs structure, order and discipline. For her own safety, she cannot be allowed to leave the classroom. Try and get her to participate as much as she is able so that she is included in the classroom activities. Perhaps assigning an aide to her who can assist her needs, help keep her on task and encourage her will help.

It could be Autism but also theres Dyspraxia, which is connected there are similar types of these behavioural conditions , The types where the child doesnt recognise social cues.
Its a lonely world for that child and it depends how serious it is . You should definately have a word with the head and see if the parents have noticed this.
I do seem to think that there is alot more of this around us now than there use to be. she needs love and telling her off wont help as she wont understand why, as she is a 'special needs child'
speak to the head first about what to do. good luck.

my little sis is autstic diganosed when she was 3 i was 5 it saddens me this epidemic, no child deserves this, only god knows the cause of this, when i was little all i wanted was a pal a person who could talk to me a peer my sister my sister doesn't say much but me more then anyone else knows whats best for her i can read her like a book its like her thoughts jump through her head to mine, i pray we find a cure soon there are tons of children with autism who deserve a 2nd chance. I love my sister and hope they find a cure soon we need more scientists and researchers we need find the missing puzzle pieces.

why dont you speak to your superior about it, and look towards getting a meeting with her parents to discuss it. The parents might be able to shed some light on her behaviour and confirm or deny that it is autism, if they have had her evaluated. She will need to be properly diagnosed.
If she IS autistic, she probably needs a special school no?
