My daughter has Cerebral Palsey and we have been teaching her ASL. It has really helped her communicate and it helps with language aqusition for all children. We use a program called Signing Time that makes learning ASL fun. I have found that most Deaf people are glad that hearing people are making an effort to learn ASL. I would like to hear comments from others.

I know someone with a child with Down Syndrome and the child is now 5 yrs. old. The child was in a community program to get the child ready for school, and as soon the child turns 3 the child goes to public school for continuing education and speech therapy services. I know having a child with a disability will have emotional conserns because I also have 2 children who are autistic and the best thing for them was to give them education and independence. I know it's hard to let her child go, but there are many parents who have to do what is best for their child to get the best possible education. The other thing is the child has to go in a school bus with obviosly with trained aids in the bus and she doesn't want her to go, actually she wants to go to school with her everyday, but the parent does not know how to drive. What are the consenquences for not enrolling your child in school. The parent does not have even the education to have her home schooled nor to transport her to school.

set up to fail? Just working them at their own level
without pushing them to learn is setting them up
for failure later on? When I was in a special school
for kids with LD I was told they are not trying to
help me do anything,I was there because I could not be helped(1970s).Is that setting me up for
failure or not?

I have a learning disability and never did good on tests.I read all the time and yet I was told to get
a job where reading skills are not important. That
was a insult to me.When I went through bureau
on vocational rehabilitation they told me forget
college or any higher education,go to trade school.
I personally do not feel a trade would be a good match for me,I hate working with my hands,I
would rather work using my mind. There is no
way I will touch a trade school.I read all the time,
it was tests that were my stumbling block.
Why should I do something I do not want to do?

I would like to get a position in a group home for individuals with developmental disabilities. There are several group homes in my neighborhood and I see some of the residents on the bus on a daily basis and I find it fun to interact with them. Would I have to be certified as a nursing assistant to qualify for the position? I am looking to work at group homes for higher-functioning residents.

Kids attitudes and behaviors have gotten worse over the last 10 years. And teh rate of behavioral problems, condtions, etc, such as Autism has gone up too. It diagnosing a child with something like Autism just an excuse for the way they act?

My son was going to Alexander Grahm Bell, but this year he must go on to a regular school, I do not want him sent on a two hour drive a day bus ride again this year to a school in a crime infested area. I want him to go to the school a few blocks from our house, but they are avoiding accomidating him. We asked them at the end of the last school year what they could provide for his education, and they didnt get back with us, so my husband went over today to have a talk again, and they called back this evening saying they really cant offer him anything. Now I'm mad, what do I do? who do I call? I know he has rights, and going into first grade he needs a special education just for him. His speech has improved dramatically being around his 3 siblings more over the summer, and I want him mainstreamed, but I fear of him being picked on for being the only kid wearing hearing aids, and unless you have been around him alot, it can be hard to understand his speach.

Someone please help.

I know that not all ASD are inclined to math. What I'm asking are the strategies that parents or teachers had used that was proven effective in teaching mathematics to ASDs of different levels and degrees. I'm looking for other methods that are not computer based or needs any medication prior to any lecture. I'm living in the Philippines and we could not afford, not even the government to give those medications. I'll be testing the methods you are to answer against TouchMath. I would appreciate it if you would as well include the source(s) of your replies.

I have only been a monitor for kids with autism for 3 weeks but I have become very fond of the kids. One of the little girls has shown so much improvement over the last year that they are moving her from her special school to a regular school so she will no longer be using my company's bus service. I am invited to a farewell/thank you party that her and her parents are having to thank the staff at her school as well as her bus monitors, and also for us all to say goodbye to her. I got her a gift of stuff I know she likes, but I need help. I cant think of words to write in the card. She is so special I just dont know how to put my feelings into words for her. She is 5.

No rude answers please!

it hasn't been identified what the disorder with this child is, but he has minor weak muscles and isn't very much aware of what surrounds him. he can't talk (but is not mute) and we've tried communicating with him by using representations. for example, if we ask him a yes or no question, we request that if the answer is yes, he claps once and twice for no. he seems so unaware of our requests and just looks around. he loves light beams, but gets tired very quickly. is there any creative way i can help this student?
