Not 100%. Somewhere in between they are at least partially responsible.

Granted I hate cig. comps. as much as the next guy but who forced the cigarettes in this person's mouth? It's like saying a gun company is responsible 4 someone's suicide.BTW, I read a study (I think it was the American Cancer Society) that 1 in 3 smokers die of lung cancer. It's a long death..My dad died from 2nd hand smoke lung cancer(never had 1 cig.) U basically just lye on a bed w/ no energy for months w/ only ur disease 2 think about so please stop smoking!(I know the asker may not b a smoker BTW). I know it's hard. I finally stopped w/ Nicorette gum so I don't judge smokers negatively-used 2 b 1..Because of witnessing my dad's unecessary suffering I beg everyone I can 2 stop!!!

No, the individual made the choice to smoke. Tobacco companies wouldn't even exist if there wasn't a demand for their products. While we could say they are slimeballs for making millions off of peoples' addictions, they are not the ones CAUSING the addiction, just cashing in on it.

In the legal world lawyers don't like that sort of blame. It is far easier if we can prove that the tobacco companies are more like 51% at fault. Then we put the parents and the system on trial.

Nope.
Just like the makers of alcohol products arent liable for people that get drunk and die.
Just like car manufacturers arent liable for people that drive 150MPH and then slam into a bridge.
Could you imagine the lawsuits brought on because of poor choices?
Imagine a guy choking on a piece of candy and then suing the company that made it because he tried swallowing a whole piece of candy.
Imagine a girl huffing finger nail polish remover, and then dying...and her parents sue the company. How dumb does that sound?
You are probably saying that cigarettes contain chemicals that kill you...duh. They say that right on the pack and its been a known fact for a long time.
So, you may be saying.."Its an addiction, they couldnt help it."
A fat guy, that loves eating and eats so much that he dies from being over weight and his heart couldnt take it...should his heirs be able to sue the people that made the food because he couldnt stop shoving it in his mouth?
Cigarettes have a warning on the side of the package, has been there for years, that tells people that it causes cancer. Yet, people still choose to stick one in their mouth and light it up.
Dont blame someone else for your stupid choices.

A drug nicotine created for leisure still knowingly causes addiction by smoking /inhalations till death.
Nothing has changed drastically but the finatics that air their space on tv TRUTH? The lawsuits still come in martyring the loss of yet another. When a person knowingly smokes around their children or loved ones are we not responsible for our actions? We ourselves watch the news, read labels knowing tobacco's lingering contaminants.
What then, blame the phil morrisses again for our choice?
Yes we should be allowed to sue and yes they are responsible only if death be caused by being in a public place its our governments responsibility 2 ensure public safty. Sue the government I dare you the laws have changed to conform to standard thats it !!! I believe it is changed in most places where we eat travel etc....
What if the same product was used in chewing gum or a pill thought to boost metabolism give energy where its needed and properly monitered by the US.GOV to be good for ones overall health? But needed a prescription? Would we be here now discussing cancer or huge defecits Would the phil morrisses of the tobacco world have the balls to market a product that would praise fewer losses in its prescribers and suffer more economically?
I HIGHLY DOUBT IT.
Our government is responsible for allowing them to continue the production knowing it kills. People still enjoy tobacco.
WHAT THEN? People enjoy sex Aids is apparent just awareness or abstenance is taught. Not banned because we have choices. So I feel its with logical sense that everyone who habits themselves on anything do so in moderation their choice!!!
McDonalds and Obesity, a new study regarding its ads have children wanting everything wrapped in it so they would eat it ITS AMAZING so we sue when the fat boy is 200 lbs over weight at the age of 10 cause MOM And DAD chose his diet comeon people. MODERATION!!!
2 MUCH OF A GOOD THING IS no good
Choice is all we have in life like when your parents guided you correctly and then came time you rebelled and said its my life??
I'll see who I wish or drink what I want at whichever age or drugs whatever... you get the mental visual its our choice and our responsibility to do whats right
You are responsible for what you do and put in your body. So Sue Yourself
Tell me how we feel they are responsible if we have a choice?
The ads are around us & our children ITS that wonderful freedom of speech and right to vote and choose.
On that note I feel we do not have the right to sue tobacco co's like phil morrises for death but have the right to ban the rights to advertise a drug or where its sold!
Do you see Cocaine ad's for sale on clark st or Mary janes sold at your malt liquor stores nopeeeeeeeeeeee so why should we see ads for Joe Camel or Cowboys in Marlboro country if they addict then kill? Hmmmmmmmmmm?

They are 0% responsible. They don't force anyone to do anything, it is common knowledge that smoking causes cancer, and if it wasn't, they paste it right on the box of cigarettes. People are responsible for their actions.

i think sorry each and every time I hear that somebody has died, in spite of who they're. I by no ability smoked and by no ability will; i'm firmly against smoking, in spite of the undeniable fact that all of us make blunders in lifestyles, yet that would not propose we deserve an early demise.

i dont think so ! they have warning labels and people should know from right to wrong . u cant compare a adult with a child who might pick up a hot charcoal and put it in his mouth because he doesnt know that it will hurt his tongue . ppl know smoking is bad yet they smoke . its their decision , their choice , tabacco companies dont force it on them .
