If you mean the director of music at a church, it varies by congregation. Smaller churches will have minimal requirements whereas the largest will require a doctorate. Generally speaking, a Bachelor of Arts in Music or Church Music is sufficient preparation.

If you mean a public school music director, that will require a 4-year degree in music education and a license from the state as a teacher. Very many music teachers have a master's degree so competition usually will require that you have one too.

If you mean the conductor of an orchestra - they are generally master's or doctorate holders with considerable experience.

If you mean the director of music in the music industry (the person who makes music videos) - that will require a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in music business with a concentration in production. It will also require some contacts.

I hope one of these is what you mean.... ☺
