Hi, I have had a speech problem for quite sometime. It just appears when I talk to people. Reading aloud or singing, its unnoticeable. I have a very high roof palate in my mouth due to my prematurity at birth, also had a major cross bite, overbite and MJF(or whatever the term is for jaw misalignment). I had speech "therapy", I guess you could say when I was in elementary, but as I got older I didn't get help. I got braces when I was 18 and my teeth are pretty much perfect, except I have a high roof still. After I got my braces removed, and during the time I had them my speech was worse than before. It is still very bad and I've had them off for over a year now. I would like to get speech assistance as I deal with the public a lot and hate people having to tell me to repeat myself or that they can't understand me. Would a speech therapist help me with this, or vocational rehabilitation or some service(as I am going back to college soon and cannot afford a high fee). Thanks so much!

I do get nervous speaking in front of groups(usually more than 10), I had a speech communications class, had 2 speeches(had great content but bombed them as far as the speaking element goes). I do not like talking on the phone much unless its someone I know very well. My best friend has a speech impediment so we understand each other very well!

Often times people that have speech or fluency (stuttering) problems will do VERY well when they sing or read. This is actually a therapy technique. If you have insurance, it should cover an assessment by a Speech Pathologist. Or, you may check with your local college, they often provide services on a sliding fee scale whether or not you are a student at the college. Where I live, the waiting list to see a Speech Pathologist is very long so I would recommend calling for an assessment as soon as possible. If money is an issue and you don't have insurance you may ask if they have a different fee schedule for clients without insurance. Good Luck!

Check with the college. They may have a speech therapy department and you may be able to go to their clinic for a reduced fee. They may be able to recommend a clinic or hospital speech therapy department to you that charges students a reduced fee.

You mention that you that you do not have a problem when you sing or read aloud. Part of your problem may be anxiety when you have to form own thoughts and speak at the same time. Then you speek poorly and get more anxious and the problem worsens. You lose confidence. A public speeking class may help to increase your confidence. Even an acting class might help.

Focus on what a good (not perfect) person you are and how much talent and information you have to share.
