I was in regular class and failing everything.I asked
my mother why won't she go and talk to the school
about my trouble with school? She said she is afraid they will put me in special ed with all the trouble makers and she will not talk to the school.
She said you have to figure your way way out of your mess. Was that right? If your middle school
kid was having trouble wouldn't you go and talk to the school? Remember one thing this was in the 1970s with me.

For some reason your mom was under the impression that all Special Ed students were trouble makers, which we know is not true.

Yes, I would go to the school and talk to the appropriate people and discuss what could be done to make school more tolerable for you. It's not right to allow a student to feel like he/she is a failure.

Let me add, it's also the schools responsibility to not let you feel like a failure and to work out a program suited to your needs.

In the 70's schools weren't like they are today. Today, schools are more equipped and more knowledgeable about learning disabilities. Parents are also more knowledgeable about Special Education.

I too went through grade, middle and high school with learning disabilities. Schools and parants alike didn't know about ADD or if they did (schools) didn't have the knowledge that children with ADD or other learning disibilities had to be taught differently.

I didn't know I had ADD until I was an adult way passed school age. My mom certainly didn't know about ADD either. Although my mom did talk to the teacher and that was probably due to the teacher contacting my mom. I was then given lower level school work to do during the rest of grade school. High school was different. I did the same work every other kid did.

So it really comes down to the time (the 70's) and lack of knowledge that the teachers and parents have today.

With all that said and done, there still was something the schools/teachers and parents could have helped you with.

The is a very good question. Hope I have helped you out.

I would recommend that you talk to your school counselor. Explain your problem. She can then call your mother and ask her to come to a school meeting. At that point the counselor can tell your mother about what the school can offer you.

Once your disabilities are diagnosed you can get help from resource teachers; often this is one-on-one tutoring and remediation activity. Today, dedicated Special Ed classrooms are pretty much only for the MR.

Obviously your mother doesn't understand that with learning differences there is pretty much no way you can work yourself out of your mess. She has the impression that you can do it, and just aren't. There is no way to prove her wrong except to get tested to verify what your issues are.

Then in all fairness if this is still toroubling you you should ask your GP for help
Either
1 your mother's words and action have emotionally damaged you - I mean like this was 30 yrs ago!!! and you need pysch help - or
2 you are still troubled by learning or behavioural difficulties and want psych help.
