If you are asking the question then you must be suspecting that already so best thing to do is:
-Speak to GP or nurse
-Speak to your child's nursery/preschool teacher
-Speak to Health Visitor
They are trained to help and support you so go speak to them...they will know 'he' better than us on here!

The answer would be dependent on the signs and symptoms that the individual is reporting/showing/experiencing. It is important to see a trained professional so as to have a clear diagnosis and access support and/or treatment.
Sometimes anxiety problems can lead one to think or believe that they are mentally ill.
Seek help and advice. Good luck.

I think most people know they have big problems, but some don't (especially for severe mental illnesses). I think it is easy for a person to not realize how *severe* their episodes are, though. I'm bipolar, and I know I have severe depression, but I think I am sometimes inappropriate, and now I am paranoid about it all the time. Seems like the meds make the problem even worse, too, because I don't know who I am anymore.

You can go to a mental health professional to get a diagnosis. You may be able to read the DSM-IV and get an idea of your problem, yourself.
Usually mentally ill people FEEL REALLY BAD.
