(I'm Canadian)
I want to take a program that's 1 year and 8 months, and costs $26,000 per year tuition. Who in the world has that kind of money? Is it totally normal for everyone to get, like, $50000 in student loans? Or do all programs give enough funding that it's no big deal, and they just say the $26,000 number to scare you off?

I've been at community college for the last few years and am finally moving up, but money is tight...When you get a student loan can you use it for other expenses than just tuition? Because here in San Diego tuition is cheap compared to my rent!!!

I don't like it, but I'm stuck at 17. Is there any way I can get a student loan; I have a cosigner, but I haven't found any place that will accept me.

There's also something my college told me has been done before, that a student can apply and qualify for a loan and not sign the promissary note until their 18th birthday; I'll turn 18 in time for them to accept that plan, but not quickly enough to have it ready at the beginning of school. Does anyone know of a company that does this? Thanks in advance

Instead of giving parents money to put their kids in private schools that are better than public schools, why doesn't the government spend that money on improving the public schools?

On July 1st, I received an email application for the new Academic Competitiveness Grant Award started by the US Government for 2006-2007. I sent in back right away and, as far as I know, my college has it. Since I already got my Financial Aid Award from the college for next year, I don't know how they are going to award this. Does anyone know how long it will take to award? When will the maximum amount be determined (the amount is limited below the maximum if too many people nationwide apply for and get it). I have a sizable balance due to my college and this would help somewhat, but I can't wait forever to have them give it to me. Does anyone know what's happening with this?

In April, members of Congress sponsored bipartisan legislation to repeal the provision in the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 that prohibits states "from providing a post-secondary education benefit to an alien not lawfully present unless any citizen or national is eligible for such benefit." The Student Adjustment Act would allow certain minor immigrant children to gain legal status and permit states to offer in-state tuition and financial aid to undocumented immigrants. To be eligible, students must under the age of 21, have lived in the United States for five years continuously, and be at least in the seventh grade or actively pursuing admission to a college or university.

I was wondering what sort of financial aid is available for me. IHere's all the information I can think of that might be relevant:
I'm going to be a sophomore, and my mom died June 29th. Also, if it helps any she had two liver transplants prior to her death. I'm a Near Eastern Studies major (focus in Persian language) with minors in political science and philosophy who will be transferring to a community college for the fall to be with my family, then hopefully transferring to Ohio State Winter Quarter. I'm Jewish, speak French, and am learning Hebrew, Persian, Arabic, and German. I'm also a recovered bulimic and bisexual. I'm looking for scholarships not contingent on grades, since my grades last semester weren't great due to my mother's illness. My dad's ex-military. My career goals are either government, non-profit, or to become a professor. Could anyone help me? I've tried a few search engines but none have really given me good results.

I am considering going back to school, and have saved money to try to buy a house someday. How long do I have to have those investments out of my name in order to receive my max in financial aid to go back to school? Also, do you get financial aid for a master's degree or just a bachelors? I am considering going from business to teaching, so it is a completely different field. Any advice would be great!! Thanks!
