I've been at community college for the last few years and am finally moving up, but money is tight...When you get a student loan can you use it for other expenses than just tuition? Because here in San Diego tuition is cheap compared to my rent!!!

yes, you should receive any aid in excess of university charges. that said, the only thing FAFSA says you absolutely CANNOT use loan funds for is to purchase a car. you can use if for maintence, gas , etc, but not to buy.

Yes you can use it for whatever you want. If you apply for student aid and you get more than you need, then after all other student costs (tuition, books, etc) are paid to the school they will send you a refund check for the difference. This works especially well if you get an extra loan in addition to the federal aid you get. But you will have to pay it back after graduation so be careful.

Also it isn't an instant rebate, it takes awhile to get it.

Yep, you can...but if you are in san diego look for falling rents as the market has a glut of housing.

you can use a student loan for anything you want. you don't have to use it for school at all if you don't want to, just remember you have to pay that back at some point or it'll bite you in the butt
