is it 38?

In this sentence:
"Though most of us have tended to seattle upon the nation as our most comfortable resting place, we have retained our propensity for vertical drift, failing to appreciate the value of a stable point of focus."

I've looked the words up in the dictionary, but can't understand the meaning of the whole sentence.
settle upon=determine
resting place=cemetery
vertical drift=wind blowing up (no sense)

I'd like someone to tell me that in their own words, if possible, please.

I am going to be a junior in high school and i don't know what i want to be when i grow up. I like to play basketball, but i just do it for fun, i just don't have the height. In 6th grade, I participated in a singing contest at school, for a school fund raiser..now that i'm 16, my voice has gotten deeper that it's been difficult. My relatives would tell me that I'm good because I can perform in front of a lot of people. I have also taken part of something in 6th grade called videorama..it's like after school and people get to participate and be on their school district tv. People act and help out. I played a role setting things and helping out in the back....does anyone have any advise on how i will know what i want to do when I grow up? My parents told me I can be a doctor or do any job related to math and science. I am good in math because my dad is good at it, but the truth is that i don't think i will enjoy doing it as a career. any ideas?

I am giving private tutorials at home and my friends are telling me that I am charging too little, considering the time I am putting in it and the high quality of my lessons (and my academic background). I decided to follow their advice, informed my students, and raised my fee.

But now I feel extremely guilty and unhappy. It just doesn't feel right. Not that my students are poor (because they can afford it). But because I feel that I am becoming greedy.

I can't take my word either. I don't want people to start taking me for granted because I can't seem to make up my mind. What should I do? Believe me, I am not earning that much. But for some reason, I feel so guilty asking for a raise.
