Surely this is different than when someone says xerox and they could give a **** if you actually use a xerox, or if they say fed ex, they really mean overnight.

Okay...I was dumb, I had four cups of coffee between 8 and 11:30 last night (chatting with a girlfriend of mine...kinda lost track). So, I have to go to school in a few hours and I haven't slept yet. Is there any way for me to stay conscious for 10 more hours (other than more cafeine)? I'm going into last year University and it's my first day of the semester, so no real brain work...I just need to stay awake until it's over for the day :) Thanks in advance :):)

You are probably not up because school has once again started. But I was just curious as so why calculators are so widly used now? The math hasn't changed. My mom never used them, my bf who is 30 never used them until he started doing algebra in highschool, and I started using them in grade 7. Now kids are asked to have one for grade 5. Is the school system trying to make kids stupid? Most people my age (23) and younger have trouble doing basic math including myself and I partly blame calculators and other things like large class loads for teachers. It seems schools are asking for them every year for younger grades and I would like to know the reasoning behind the decision.

I was told to "look into it" by a couple people who said that S.S. pays for the care of an elderly person, even if it's a relative and it would be done without payment otherwise. Anyone know about this?

So often the category "Homework Help" contains requests for more than just help; more than just a hint to get a student started. What do you feel constitutes crossing the line between asking for help and asking for someone to do your work for you?

when taking an IQ test, often, the test requires us to answer questions in which pictures (usually geometric diagrams) are shown and then it ask us to find the next picture in the sequence or find a picture that doesn't belong to the group. Does anyone know a website that explains how to see the pictures or can anyone explain it to me?

Throughout history many countries have been occupied, but I think the establishment of a new country with a new people, is a new phenomenon that is exclusive to our times.
Students are saying that sixty years ago such a country did not exist. They show old documents and globes and say try as we have, we have not been able to find a country named Israel.

(A lack of independant thinking )
A previous answerer mentioned we are more advanced now because more people are educated than in the past....
But the quality of education has sliped dramaticaly in recent years, medothology and aproach and organisation and simply just working anything out seems to be missing from education.
I recently took gcse maths at my local college, the percentage of my grade to get a pass was about 30 % from memory, this is a joke!!!
My education im now 26 was discusting compared to the gennerations past say a 45 year olds education, the methods taught to us and the ability to weight qusetions up gather info and come to an inteligent conclusion has slipped.
Why is quantity more important to us as voters than quality?
The loss of Independant thinking is the essence of my question!
