If I remove the USB cable to the freeview aerial whilst not in use, will PC still recognise it as the Freeview TV when I connect it again or will it request reinstallation &/or effect the working of the Freeview aerial?

I have a new PC, built by a computer shop. It has been working great, but recently, without any apparent reason or warning, it just turns off. There is nothing on the screen, the power light is on, the hard-disk indicator light is on, and the computer tower makes a beeping sound. This sound is a long beep, every 4 seconds, which seems to keep going until the power button is held long enough to turn the PC off.

The PC specs are as follows;
Mother board - ECS C51GM-M S AM2 MATX DDR2 S/L/V
Processor - AMD ATHLON 64 3500+ 512K SKT-AM2
Memory - 2x 1Gb DDR2 533 CL3.0 16 CHIP
Hard disks - 1x Hitachi T7K250 200Gb ATA133 7200rpm 8MB Cache
1x Maxtor 6L160P0 Diamondmax 10 160Gb 7200rpm ATA/133 8MB Cache
Graphics - Asus X1600 PRO 512MB DDR2 / 128bit
CD drive - Samsung 52X32X52 OEM CD REWRITER
DVD drive - DVD±RW NEC ND-3540 16x Double Layer
3.5” Floppy Drive
MIDI Case ATX-900 300W

Can anyone help with this problem?

I understand that the USB data sticks will work easily with Win XP but does anyone know if they could also be used to download data from a Windows 98 system? I'm trying to transfer data from an old to newer pc and am having the usual computer frustrations...siiigh. (the file transfer wizard will not let me attach a direct cable because I have no 'system disk' with the preloaded system. If anyone knows how to solve that one too...I would be be eternaly grateful!!)

The computer is rather old and as said before has been rebuilt. I bought a 3com dsl modem to install, and thought that I had it in right but my dsl keeps freezing up on me. Is there anything that I need to do other than "sticking" it inside the computer? Please help.

I've heard that a surge protector will only protect the computer from power fluctuations, but that a lightning strike is so strong that nothing can protect the computer from it. Any experiences?
