The old HPs were good machines. I had one once and it was a good machine. Lasted forever. After Dell bought Compaq I have little trust in the quality. It is like they adopted Compaq's failed computer models. I have had nothing but misery with Compaq desktops and servers.
With Dell I've have mostly good experiences. I buy mostly White boxes but I do own one Dell and at work have purchased hundreds of Dells and White boxes. I personally prefer Dell even over the old HPs. Better consistantcy and the only one I had that was deffective out of the box I was able to exchange for a new one fairly easily.
My main preference and one I recomend if you are technically minded is a White box. While today a brand new one costs about the same as a Dell or an HP. What you get by using a White Box is a whole lot more flexibilty and really 2 or 3 machines rather than one you throw away a few years from now. It was better in the past when you had more backward compatability. Still you want the latest video technology you buy a video card not a whole new computer. You want a faster machine you buy a new MB and usually now days new RAM. You want to have 3 HDs not a problem with most White boxes. Many Dell and HPs make it difficult to add a second hard drive much less 3 or 4 or even a SATA array of drives if you did not buy a machine that comes with SATA. More so you know your machine inside and out because you built it. When something goes wrong you can fix it.
On the downside if you don't know what you are doing you can build a pretty poor machine by choosing inferior products. Sometimes even with good components you get a lemon. This happens with name brands also. So it's a risk you take. With a White box you sometimes run into hardware incompatabilities. So it can sometimes be a little frustrating. So you have to have a technical bent or a friend with a technical bent just in case. still long term you get more machine for far less money if you build y our own.

HP is better has worked real good and I have 2 HP desktops and a HP Laptop. Dell owns Alianware. HP Owns Voodoo PC's and Compaq. Like Dell uses Alianware for gaming, HP uses Voodoo PC's for gaming and Compaq is for work files and HP is mostly for everything.

Alienware is owned by Dell now. ;)
As for your question, it's sort of like asking what's better? A turd sandwich or a giant douche?
Buy a Mac. The new ones will even run Windows. :)

Between these two I would have to go with HP. Otherwise, 'Dude you're getting a Dud'.
