I don't understand what some abbreviations mean. I'm not familiar with the short hand many people use online. Can you give me some examples, and the meanings of them? Like this for example: "asl" means age, sex, and location. "lol" means laugh out loud.

The computer will just cut off at any point and I have to completely disconnect the power to turn it back on. I know it is not a virus. It is an HP desktop.

I am ready to give my desk top to a friend of my best friend. This guy is a computer wizard and I DO NOT want him browsing around my hard drive to try to find any info stored in there. I do not know this guy very well and I want to be careful, as my SS#, bank accounts etc. may be accessed through the hard drive. Can he access that info and if so, how can clean that info?

My notebook has to go out for repair this week. It's 2 months old and there's something wrong with the harddrive. It's a Compaq Presario V2000. Model#V2555CA. Can anybody tell me quick how to back up all my files to CD for free? And seeing as it's my hard drive, should I back IT up?

I have a old computer (3 yrs. old) sitting in my house that caught a virus, so I decided to fix it. Messing around i tried to install the emachines winXP cd in it- which does not work on anything else but an emachine, and the old pc, of course, is not one- and now I cannot remove it to install the regular windows xp cd.
Does anyone have any ideas how should I remove it?
And how can I reach DOS when i reboot my computer?
How can I format my C: drive?

I have been building computers for years. And today my hubby's computer keeps rebooting to the CMOS. I have never had this happen before and I am at a loss to understand what is happening or how to correct the problem. I did check the CMOS to make sure it is seeing the Hard Drives, which it is. I also check to make sure the booting sequence is starting with HDD 0 then to the CDROM. Everything looks ok in the CMOS, but I can't get it to boot to anything other then going into the CMOS.

Does anyone know why this is happening and what I can do to correct this problem.

I have known that recently the computer has been shutting down and powering off, or sometimes it will just go into a reboot on its own. I had a feeling it might be because it was over heating. When I built the computer for him I had it set in the CMOS to shut down when the temp reached 160 degrees to protect the CPU and Motherboard from being damaged.

Any help or ideas would be appreciated.
