I know you can send text messages for free online. I don't know about the receiving though. You have to pay for the receiving I think.

you can get a free email account from yahoo...included in the account is free email...and free text messages...you can send text messages to peoples phones from your account...it,s really easy to set up the account...and it activates straightaway

you can use aim... when adding the contact put +1 and enter the number including the area code...
