The car is a 2000 honda civic automatic. I was going about 20-25mph and I was pressing the breaks. The 1000r/min was also up. I quickly pulled into a large driveway and pressed the breaks really hard and the car came to a loud hault and I put the car in park. The car made a loud broom gurr noise. I then turned off the engine. I called a mechanic to come check the car out (he works a couple of blocks from my parked car). When he arrived like 10 minutes later, he turned on the engine and drove around, nothing seemed to be wrong with the car. He took the car to his shop and ran a scanner on the car to check for any problems. He said nothing was wrong with it. He could not duplicate the problem. I drove the car home and all of a sudden the same thing happened the engine was shaking and the 1000r/min was up to 4 when I was breaking and it took alot of effort to stop the car. I immediately shut it off. What is wrong with the car. The mechanic says nothing is wrong? It is scary!!!!

I'm 15, and recently acquired my permit. I have taken 2 behind-the-wheel lessons so far (2 hrs each, and will have one more yet). I've been out driving some in the past couple of weeks, and I'm comfortable and calm while driving, but of course I realize I need a lot more practice now and experience through the years as well.

Any tips for being a safe driver would be wonderful. Even the littlest of things could be of great importance. Thanks! :)

This question is about bad drivers out there. This morning, I was driving up a street with 2 way traffic. There are metered parking areas on both sides. This lady in her BIG truck was facing the wrong way in the meter on the right lane. I was driving up like anyone would and all of a sudden she decides she wants to pull out of that parking spot, which would mean she'd be pullling out on the wrong side of traffic direction. She raises her arms in anger as if she were saying, "What the hell are you doing, can't you see I'm coming out?" Like, HELLO......who is she to be doing that? I should be the one raising hell on her for driving stupid on the wrong side and expect me to give her the right of way if I'm already riding in the flow with no traffic lights or stop signs. Is she crazy or what? She should go to traffic school and practice the laws of driving. Oh, and just because she's driving a big, heavy duty truck doesn't mean she owns the road. What are your thoughts?

Yes it is and here is why:

When changing gear in a UK car with the steering wheel on the right , your left hand changes gear and your right hand stays on the steering wheel, (this is safer for right handed people.)

The reverse is the case in countries where one must drive on the right.-- in the USA you hold the steering wheel with your left hand and change gear with your right hand, this is dangerous if you are right handed.

Bicycles: Try mounting a bike in the USA and you will find yourself in the stream of traffic when getting on the bike---- try it yourself. Mounting a bike in the UK is done from the sidewalk by right handed people .

To reverse in the UK hold the steering wheel with right hand and look over my left shoulder to the rear window. In a USA car left hand is used and view is over right shoulder.

Right handed people are mostly "right eyed" the traffic comes toward them on their right in the UK but from the left in the USA.

I'm turning 21 in the middle of the month, and my driver's license expires at the end about two weeks after my 21st birthday. Should I renew my driver's license before or after my birthday?? Help me out

I think all this confusion over what is over and under the limit for driving is too sketchy. Instead of banning someone over the limit for a year, just take away the licence for GOOD. No return. NO drinking , even a sniff of it, should be tolerated.

When someone gets a 12 month ban, its not over when they get their licence back. They'll struggle to get insurance and any job involving driving.

A new law is needed. Zero Tolerance. Drink & Drive - Lose your licence for life. That'll put a stop to it.

I just got my permit a couple weeks ago and I had my first required lesson with a driving teacher. He told me to, after making a turn, let go of the wheel so that the vehicle can automatically straighten itself out. My initial instincts were that this was totally crap, because letting go of the wheel with both hands, ever, means loss of control with the vehicle, which is bad for numerous reasons. And a week or so later, while driving with my dad, after I completed a turn and took my hands off the wheel to, as my instructed told me, let the car could straighten out, my dad said to never ever do that. And he basically told me that my initial instincts were true. So, who should I listen to, the instructor who has taught countless kids this or my dad who has taken defensive driving courses where the men there told him that taking your hands off the wheel is a serious mistake. So. take both hands off the wheel sometimes, or never?

Should you be required to ride in a car with a stranger during drivers ed? In my opinion, you shouldn't. I would not feel safe being in a car with someone I barely know because my life is basically in their hands. I mean, I know there's a brake on the passenger side...but really that's not much protection. I think it should only be for you to learn to drive...not to watch perfect strangers drive and be so nervous you can't even pay attention to what they're doing anyway.
