I'm 15, and recently acquired my permit. I have taken 2 behind-the-wheel lessons so far (2 hrs each, and will have one more yet). I've been out driving some in the past couple of weeks, and I'm comfortable and calm while driving, but of course I realize I need a lot more practice now and experience through the years as well.
Any tips for being a safe driver would be wonderful. Even the littlest of things could be of great importance. Thanks! :)

I told my kids that they should always drive in a predictable
manner. If the nascar wannabes can tell what you're going
to do next, they can miss you. The careful drivers probably
will miss you anyway. Here are 5 "keys" that I picked up in
a professional driver's safety course:
1. Aim high in steering-That means focus your attention in
the distance. The way the brain processes the picture
will allow you to notice things closer to you. Not so if you
focus up close.
2. Keep your eyes moving-Keep scanning every window,
every mirror.
3. Get the big picture-Assess hazards long before you get
to them.
4. Make sure they see you-Make eye contact with other
drivers. Chances of avoiding an accident are much
better if both drivers see each other.
5. Leave yourself an out-Maintain extra room between you
and other vehicles, ahead AND to the sides. A shoulder
is nice in case you need to swerve. Extra distance is
best. Others will dart in and take your "extra" space. Be
patient (its better than being A patient).
Remember space=time (to figure it out)
Be safe and good luck.

Don't let yourself get so relaxed that you let things not related to driving distract you.
That includes conversations, cell phone, stereo, eating, or even navigation. (if you miss a turn, you can always go back) Driving is a full time activity. Nothing is more important, when behind the wheel, than safe driving. By keeping your mind clear of other distractions, it allows you to observe potential hazards before you need to react.
This is the general meaning of "defensive driving." If there is anything a driver can do to avoid a collision, injury or death, then that driver should do it. I does not matter who has the "right of way." NEVER put yourself in harms way.

The first thing that you have to remember is to be careful of everyone else. If your on the freeway look around you and make sure to leave yourself a "way out" incase the person in front of you loses control. Also keep your distance between you and the other vehicles on the road. Watching your mirrors is another good thing to do once you are a little more comfortable driving, by always observing what is going on around you can help you prevent yourself from an accident.
Don't forget that one way to be safe is to make sure that the vehicle you are driving is safe. Check fluid levels and tire pressure often and make sure to change your oil and get regular check-ups.

Don't just stare at the car right in front of you look the what is going on way in front of you.
Use your mirrors all the time, check all three at least once or twice every minute to know where the cars around you are so if you need to get out of the way of something, stop etc.. you know where you can do it and if there is a car in the way etc..
If the weather is bad you must slow down.
Look for hazards all the time and be prepared to deal with them.
On the highway stay out of the left lane unless you are passing other cars, and only pass on the left.
And last and most important ALWAYS wear your seat belt, Seat belts save lives.

Mainly, be aware of what is going on around you. Turn off the cell phone and keep the radio low enough to hear sirens. Check the mirrors often. Watch for other drivers who may not be paying attention. Keep a distance from the car ahead of you in case they slam on the brakes.

Always be defensive and don't get mad when someone else does wrong. This will keep you healthy. Never assume anything which is part of being defensive. In the back of your mind always think of the next driver as about to do something really stupid. You'll be fine.

the most important one for me is to be a defensive driver, always check all your mirrors about every 3 min., don't ride on people's butts....that never ends well, and watch for those pedestrians EVERYWHERE, those blinding spots are horrible! you 'll do great......oh, yeah, but i figure you know this already....don't speed! ; )
